The Daily Brief Wednesday, August 13, 2008

"The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases. . . " (Lam. 3:22)

The Daily Brief

1. Russia Orders Halt to War, Georgia Skeptical - AP

Russian president says military's halted operations in Georgia but Tbilisi casts doubt on announcement, saying Moscow's still bombing towns and villages.

· Continue to pray for the safety of Georgia's skies and citizens. We are dumbfounded at the arrogance of Russia in attacking this small nation. Pray that our media will reveal all aspects of these attacks and not bury the details in silly media reports.

· "Scornful men bring a city into a snare: but wise men turn away wrath." (Proverbs 29:8)

2. BP Shuts Down Georgian Pipeline as Precautionary Measure - Fox News

BP PLC said it shut down an oil pipeline that runs through Georgia on Tuesday as a precautionary measure, but added that it is unaware of any Russian bombings on pipelines in the region. BP said the 90,000-barrel-a- day pipeline to Supsa on Georgia's Black Sea coast from Baku in Azerbaijan will remain closed indefinitely. Another pipeline operated by the London-based oil company in the former Soviet Republic, the larger Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, is already out of action after a fire last week on its Turkish stretch. The BTC pipeline usually provides around 1 million barrels of Caspian crude to international markets.

· Pray for the safety in Georgia of the oil lines to British oil. God can make the oil lines invisible to bombers, and the Holy Spirit can provide the necessary oil. Pray for the sovereignty of the country of Georgia and for the freedom of its citizens.

· "And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus." (Phil. 4:19)

3. Official: Senior Al Qaeda Commander Killed in Pakistan - Fox News

Senior Al Qaeda commander Abu Saeed al-Masri has been killed in recent clashes with Pakistani forces in a Pakistani region near the Afghan border, a security official told Reuters on Tuesday.

· Although we are relieved that the danger posed by this terrorist is now past, we nevertheless cry out to You, Lord, for the salvation of the many other Al-Qaida agents that are yet on the loose. May they each find You as their savior and Lord, and as the answer to their own needs. We ask You, too, to break up this horrible ring of death that still trains for the destruction of human lives, In Jesus' Name we ask this prayer, amen.

· "Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man. Through God we shall do valiantly: for He it is that shall tread down our enemies." (Psalm 60: 11,12)

4. Iraq Demands 'Clear Timeline' for U.S. Troop Withdrawal - Fox News

Iraq's foreign minister insisted Sunday that any security deal with the United States must contain a "very clear timeline" for the departure of U.S. troops. A homicide bomber struck north of Baghdad, killing at least five people including an American soldier.

· Pray that our authorities be given wisdom to know the timing of this withdrawal . . .

· "To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven . . ." (Eccl. 3:1)

5. Pakistan's Punjab Assembly Votes Overwhelmingly for Musharraf to Quit - Washington Post

Members of Punjab province's local assembly voted 321 to 25 Monday that President Pervez Musharraf should leave office, a move that analysts say is likely to be followed by the country's three other provincial assemblies in coming days.

· Because Pakistan is one of the nations in the world that has nuclear weapons, this is a situation that bears close watching . . . and praying. President Musharraf is now being confronted on several fronts, with Pakistan's leaders demanding that he either step down or be impeached. Pray a mantle of PEACE over the nation of Pakistan in this troubled time.

· "Ask, and ye shall receive . . ." (John 16:24)

6. California: Prop. 8 backers drop challenge on wording - SF Chronicle

The state's official description of Proposition 8 on the November ballot will remain as is, a statement that the measure would eliminate same-sex couples' right to marry in California.

· Praise the Lord that common sense has prevailed in California. Pray now for that state so that the residents will vote for Proposition 8 and against the ruling of the activist judges who have tried to override the will of the people. Pray also for Gov. Schwartznegger that he can have the mind of God for this issue.

· "But the Lord of Hosts shall be exalted in judgment, and God that is holy shall be sanctified in righteousness." (Isaiah 5:16)

7. CA legislature passes bill for 'gay day' celebrations in schools - One News Now

California public schools soon will be planning "gay day" celebrations every May 22 unless Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoes the legislation.

· Pray that the governor WILL veto this legislation!

· "This far you may come, but no farther, And here your proud waves must stop!" (Job 38:11)

Denver Police: Braced for Convention

DENVER POLICE BRACE FOR CONVENTION
Federal and local authorities are girding for huge protests, mammoth traffic tie-ups and civil disturbances at the Democratic National Convention in Denver this month, (August 25-28) fearing that the convention will become a magnet for militant protest groups. Officials say that what makes Denver different than past conventions is the historic nature of Senator Barack Obama's nomination, a megawattage event whose global spotlight could draw tens of thousands of demonstrators, including self-described anarchists who the police fear will infiltrate peaceful protest groups to disrupt the weeklong event.

The Secret Service is wary of discussing threats against the people they protect, but with Mr. Obama poised to become the first black presidential nominee, there are special worries. While law enforcement officials say there are no specific, credible threats against Mr. Obama, they expressed concern about low-level chatter on Web sites frequented by white separatists who spew hate about Mr. Obama's race and what they perceive as his liberal agenda. As a result, the Secret Service, the Pentagon, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and scores of police departments are moving thousands of agents, analysts, officers and employees to Denver for the convention. (NYT, The Hill)

Defense Secretary "Very Satisfied" with New Intel Structure

Executive Order's Amendments Clarify Intelligence Duties

Defense Secretary Robert Gates Says He's "Very Satisfied" With Executive Order Unifying U.S. Intelligence Community.

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates, who helped develop EO 12333, told reporters: "I'm very satisfied with the executive order. I believe that the authorities of the secretary of defense are adequately preserved in this." Gates knew what he was talking about, as a former director of central intelligence (DCI) and now head of the Defense Department, whose budget and personnel provide more than 80 percent of the money and manpower in the intelligence community. Gates credited solving the contentious Defense Department issues in EO 12333 to Mike McConnell, a former Navy admiral and now DNI; Michael V. Hayden, a former Air Force general and now CIA director; James R. Clapper Jr., another former Air Force general and now undersecretary of defense for intelligence; and himself. He said they "trust each other, and we spent a lot of time together working through a lot of these problems. To be honest, I think with a different cast of characters it probably could not have been done." (The Washington Post, 8/11/08)

CHPP Supports TheCall

TheCall isn't a conference or a festival; it is a solemn assembly - a gathering of all ages, races and denominations. The 12 hours of TheCall are spent primarily before the Lord in the place of repentance, prayer, and worship. The hour is late and the time is urgent. Our nation is in desperate need of revival. We are seeing some signs of God moving, but we do not have what we need. Full-scale revival is only ushered in through the collective body of Christ uniting in repentance and prevailing prayer. When there seems to be no remedy, when there seems to be no hope for a nation, God still has a holy prescription . . . God has a dream. "Blow the trumpet in Zion, gather the people, call a fast."
