Presidential Message - Christmas, 2008

Christmas 2008 But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ[a] the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger." (Luke 2:10-12)

Each year, Christmas brings together families, friends, and communities to rejoice in the birth of Jesus Christ and celebrate the wonderful gifts God has bestowed upon us. During this season, we remember Jesus' birth from the Virgin Mary, His justice and mercy that changed the world, and His ultimate sacrifice for all people. Though Jesus was born humbly in a manger, He was destined to be the Savior of the world. The light He brought into the world continues to break through darkness and change people's lives two thousand years later.

This holiday season, as you rejoice in the good news of Jesus' love, forgiveness, acceptance, and peace, I encourage you to show grace to those less fortunate, just as God showed it to us. By serving those in need and through other acts of love and compassion, we can honor God's goodness and affirm the immeasurable value God places on the sanctity of life. We remember the members of our Armed Forces serving to protect our country and secure God's gift of freedom for others around the globe. All Americans are indebted to these men and women and their families for their sacrifice, devotion to duty, and patriotism.

Laura and I send our best wishes for a very Merry Christmas. May you be surrounded by loved ones and blessed by the Author of Life during this joyous holiday and throughout the New Year.

PLEASE NOTE:

Israeli Police on High Alert for Hanukkah [Reported by: Bridges for Peace]As in every year, police have declared a state of high alert throughout Israel with the commencement of Hanukkah. The special deployment came into effect on December 21, and will last until the school vacations end next week. The defense establishment confirmed it is currently monitoring six specific terror plot alerts, along with dozens of general alerts.

Terror organizations have long put an emphasis on carrying out attacks particularly during holiday seasons. Police will erect mobile roadblocks at various points to detect suspicious vehicles or people, particularly at city entrance points. There will also be more stringent monitoring of military checkpoints in the Palestinian Authority as well as international border crossings. Thousands of police officers from all districts, reinforced by Border Guard troops and volunteers from the Civil Guard, will spread out in population centers both in uniform and undercover. They will focus on city centers, markets, recreation arenas, parts and entertainment centers- putting an emphasis on the traditional holiday events.

Protection efforts will also be coupled with increased enforcement. Traffic Police, in conjunction with volunteers and the police helicopter unit, will patrol the main routes and work to prevent the anticipated congestion.Traffic Police units are also preparing to crack down on drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Investigators will also be reinforced with the commencement of the vacation period, as there is concern of teenage violence and vandalism.

The day before schools will reopen their gates, bomb squads are to comb the buildings and grounds for possible explosive devices. Speaking at the menorah lighting ceremony at the residence of President Shimon Peres on Sunday evening, Police Commissioner Dudi Cohen said: "There is no other police force in the world that faces such a variety of challenges and complexities." (By Efrat Weiss, Ynetnews.com, December 21, 2008)

Prayer Focus:Hanukkah is often a time of terrorist threat. Pray for the protection of Israel as terrorist groups seek to inflict death and violence during this time of joyful celebration and remembrance.Scripture:"Preserve me, O God, for in You I put my trust." (Psalm 16:1)

Our Annual Christmas Message

Our Annual Christmas Message:One Solitary Life

He was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant. He grew up in another village, where he worked in a carpenter shop until he was 30. Then, for three years, he was an itinerant preacher. He never wrote a book. He never held an office. He never had a family or owned a home. He didn't go to college. He never lived in a big city. He never traveled 200 miles from the place where he was born.

He did none of the things that usually accompany greatness. He had no credentials but himself. He was only 33 when the tide of public opinion turned against him. His friends ran away. One of them denied him.

He was turned over to his enemies and went through the mockery of a trial. He was nailed to a cross between two thieves. While he was dying, his executioners gambled for his garments, the only property he had on earth. When he was dead, he was laid in a borrowed grave, through the pity of a friend.

Twenty centuries have come and gone, and today he is the central figure of the human race. I am well within the mark when I say that: all the armies that ever marched, all the navies that ever sailed,
all the parliaments that ever sat, all the kings that ever reigned--put together--
have not affected the life of man on this earth as much as that one, solitary life.
