The Daily Brief - Thursday, November 5, 2009

He allowed no man to oppress them; for their sake he rebuked kings:
"Do not touch my anointed ones; do my prophets no harm."
(I Chronicles 16: 21,22)

Today's Daily Brief

1. Central banks lead subtle shift away from dollar - Reuters

Central banks with trillions of dollars in reserves that are already stepping up euro and yen purchases will likely continue doing so in coming years, driven by worries over the stability of the greenback.

- Father, we ask for a stable solution to the dollar crisis. So many ministries worldwide depend upon the American dollar for food, and the very staples of life, so we pray for Your power to protect them in this economic crunch.

- "Cast your burden on the Lord and He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved." (Psalm 55:22)

2. A) Republicans Rally Resistance to Health Care Bill, as House Vote Nears - Fox News

As a crowd of protesters shouted "kill the bill," House Republicans on Thursday rallied opposition against the Democrats' health care legislation, decrying the bill on the steps of Congress in a last-ditch bid to derail or at least delay the legislation heading toward a possible vote Saturday.

B) Democrats' Plan to Help 'Uninsurables' Requires 6-Month Wait - AP

You're afraid your cancer is back, and a health insurance company just turned you down. Under the health care bills in Congress, you could apply for coverage through a new high-risk pool that President Barack Obama promises would immediately start serving patients with pre-existing medical problems. Wait a second. Read the fine print. You may have to be uninsured for six months to qualify.

- Lord, we pray that the message from the protests today and the information about these poorly conceived portions of the healthcare bill would ring through the hearts and minds of our legislators. We pray that the revelation of truth would stop this healthcare bill on Saturday.

- "There is one who speaks like the piercing of the sword; but the tongue of the wise promotes health." (Proverbs 12:18)

3. Senate Enviro Panel Passes Climate Bill - The Washington Times

The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Thursday passed a sweeping climate bill co-authored by Chairman Barbara Boxer and Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., with no Republicans participating in the 10-1 vote.

Republicans, who opposed the bill, boycotted drafting sessions called by Boxer this week and were absent from the room. Sen. Tom Carper of Delaware was the lone Democrat to miss the vote.

- Lord, yet again the Democrats have failed to listen to the message being proclaimed, and moved ahead without a bipartisan consensus. We pray that You would raise up powerful voices and stop this bill from being passed in the full Senate.

- "Surely these are poor. They are foolish; for they do not know the way of the Lord, the judgment of their God." (Jeremiah 5:4)

4. Planned Parenthood's abortion quotas exposed - WND

A former director of a Texas Planned Parenthood branch who resigned after she watched an ultrasound-guided abortion told WND the clinic was pushing employees to strive for abortion quotas to boost profits.

- Father, we praise You for revealing the hidden agendas of Planned Parenthood. We pray that more and more revelation of truth would be exposed, and that the abortion network would crumble. We take authority over the demonic realm and their plans to destroy children, and bind them by the power of the Blood of Jesus.

- "And I will give you the keys of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." (Matthew 16:19)

5. New Orleans getting $1 billion barrier - Washington Times

Mindful that the suburban West Bank of New Orleans has regained its pre-Hurricane Katrina population and is primed for growth, the Army Corps of Engineers is launching a $1 billion effort to keep the next storm at bay.

- Lord, we have never understood why a city would be built below sea level right next to bodies of water. We pray for Your mercy over the people of New Orleans, and ask You to grant wisdom to those building this barrier so that the money spent will not be in vain.

- "There is a man whose labor is with wisdom, knowledge, and skill;" (Ecclesiastes 2:21a)

6. Merkel: Iranian threat to Israel threatens us all - Ynet News

German Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke before the US Congress on Tuesday and said that the Iranian threat to Israel was "a threat to the free world. Anyone threatening Israel threatens us all. The safety of the State of Israel is nonnegotiable. It never was and it never will be."

- Lord, as other world leaders work to crush Israel, we thank You for this voice of reason. We ask Your protection for Ms. Merkel, and pray that her words will be heeded by our leadership.

- "Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away." ( Hebrews 2:1)

1. Clinton: Settlements are illegitimate, should be halted forever - Ha'aretz

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton defended the U.S stance toward Israeli settlement building to worried Arab allies on Wednesday, saying Washington does not accept the legitimacy of the West Bank enclaves and wants to see their construction halted "forever."

2. Missionary Event for Teenagers in Ashdod - Arutz Sheva

A missionary seminar was held for teenagers in Ashdod ten days ago, teaching them how to 'witness' to their friends in violation of Israeli law.

3. Peres calls Abbas to discuss resumption of peace talks - Ha'aretz

President Shimon Peres called Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas Wednesday to discuss efforts to restart the peace process.

4. Israeli Commandos Intercept Huge Arms Shipment - NewsMax

Israeli commandos seized a ship Wednesday that defense officials said was carrying more than 60 tons of missiles, rockets and anti-tank weapons bound for Lebanon's Iranian-backed Hezbollah guerrillas.

5. 'Francop' second German ship caught with Hizbullah-bound weapons - Jerusalem Post

The Francop, the German-owned vessel seized early Wednesday by the Israel Navy that was carrying weapons destined for Syria and Hizbullah, is the second German-owned ship found carrying Hizbullah-bound arms in the past month.

Maine-taining Momentum

In the wee hours of Wednesday morning, it was clear that the presumptions about New England and its social liberalism were no match for the people's commitment to real marriage. For the first time in this fight, voters rejected (53% to 47%) a same-sex "marriage" bill after elected officials approved it. From the Northeast to the west coast, voters have beaten back the Left's agenda in all 31 states that have put marriage to the test. In a sometimes emotional and often overwhelming contest, the Stand for Marriage Maine coalition withstood intense pressure from inside and outside the state. They were outspent and outmaneuvered, but one thing they weren't was outnumbered.

Our heartfelt congratulations go out to everyone on the ground in Maine, and in particular, FRC's Watchman on the Wall pastor who helped led the coalition effort: Bob Emrich. Together with help from FRC Action and others across the country, he helped repudiate Maine's leaders for turning their backs on constituents. It's not unreasonable to suggest that people like Governor Baldacci (D), who had the liberal special interests in their back pocket, may soon pay a political price. Now that they've seen the potency of this issue, it's safe to say that any legislator who voted for same- sex "marriage" will be in for some sleepless nights before the next election. Meanwhile, we hope the message from Maine voters will be heard in Washington and state capitals around the nation. Traditional marriage is a winning issue in every corner of America! A Message From Congressman Mike Pence

With the House of Representatives scheduled to vote on Nancy Pelosi's health care takeover bill, a watershed moment in American history is fast approaching. In this video, Congressman Mike Pence puts the battle over health care in the context of freedom and of the relationship between the individual and the state.

Only massive public opposition has a chance to stop the federal usurpation that the Democrats are planning.

The House Republican Conference, meanwhile, has gone to the Herculean effort of tabulating the new federal boards, bureaucracies, commissions, and programs that would be established by the House bill-- all in the name of cutting costs, of course! They add up to 111 . . .

[A note from the editor: if you are as yet undecided about whether to support Nancy Pelosi's health care bill, please view this video. Thank you.]

Congress and the Goldstone Report

21% of Democrats did not support pro-Israel House resolution on Goldstone report

On Tuesday, 33 Democrats voted "no" and 20 Democrats voted "present" on House Resolution 867, which condemned the "Goldstone report" on Israel's conduct in Gaza last winter. The final roll call vote on the House floor was 344 for, 36 against, and 22 present.

H. Res. 867, introduced by Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, calls on the Obama administration to oppose efforts by the Arab states in the UN General Assembly and other international forums to use the Goldstone report as a propaganda tool and a diplomatic weapon to attack Israel. In all, 21 percent of the Democratic caucus did not support this pro-Israel measure.

Republican Jewish Coalition Executive Director Matt Brooks said:

The Goldstone report was an egregious example of the United Nations Human Rights Council at work. At the instigation of the UN's powerful Organization of the Islamic Conference, UNHRC commissioned a report on Israel's Operation Cast Lead in Gaza last winter that was intended to portray Israel as the aggressor, as intentionally causing Palestinian civilian casualties, and as a violator of human rights. The resulting report was biased and inaccurate.

We are very concerned that 21 percent of the Democrats in the U.S. House (53 of 256) refused to support H.Res. 867, including many top Democratic leaders and important and influential House committee and subcommittee chairmen.

Democrats continue to campaign in the Jewish community as unwavering friends of Israel, but when it comes to acting on those promises, leading Democrats fall short. (Republican Jewish Coalition) Read more.

Terror Alert #1

Canadians linked to Detroit imam fight extradition to US

A lawyer for two Canadians wanted by the FBI following the death of a controversial imam in a police shootout in Detroit says they plan to fight extradition. The two men, Mohammad Al-Sahli, 33, and Yassir Ali Khan, 30, both of Windsor, Ontario, appeared briefly in court on Monday. Lawyer Patrick Ducharme says their case was put over until Friday for a bail hearing. The men, arrested Saturday, remain in jail. The FBI accuses the men of a conspiracy to sell stolen goods, and says they were followers of Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah. A police complaint suggests the imam espoused violence and sought to establish a Shariah-law state within the United States, a claim his mosque calls preposterous. (AP) Read more

Sharia Alert in Arizona

Woman in suspected 'honor killing' dies

[Note: "Honor Killings" are legal and required under Sharia -- Islamic -- law. Pray for justice to reign in the case sited below: that the law of our land not yield to the law of Islam.]

A 20-year-old Peoria woman has died of injuries sustained in what prosecutors are calling an "honor killing." Faleh Hassan Almaleki, 48, of Glendale, is accused of running over his daughter, Noor Almaleki, and another woman in his Jeep Cherokee because he was infuriated with his daughter for becoming "too Westernized." Noor Almaleki died Monday of injuries she received during the Oct. 20 attack. Peoria police said charges against Almaleki, who is in a Maricopa County jail on two counts of aggravated assault, will be upgraded, though a spokesman wasn't sure what the exact charges would be.

Social experts say honor killings are an accepted practice in Iraqi tribal society, where family members feel they must kill a woman who shames them by not adhering to traditional Muslim or Iraqi values. Family members said Almaleki was outraged after his daughter married a man in Iraq but returned to the Valley to live with a boyfriend and his mother in Surprise. The other victim, 43-year-old Amal Edan Khalaf, is apparently the boyfriend's mother. (Arizona Republic) Read more .

S.D. pro-life group no longer denied access to school campus

RAPID CITY, S.D. - Attorneys with the Alliance Defense Fund have obtained a settlement from officials with the Rapid City Area School District in a lawsuit involving a pro-life group's request to use a school auditorium for an after-school meeting. In 2008, ADF filed suit against the school district after it denied Citizens for Life access to school facilities even though it allowed other groups to meet.

"Pro-life groups shouldn't be discriminated against for their beliefs. They have the same First Amendment rights as anyone else in America," said ADF Senior Legal Counsel Byron Babione. "We're pleased with the school district's decision to amend its previous policy and their commitment to honor the constitutional right of Citizens for Life to have equal access to public facilities."
