The Daily Brief - Wednesday, May 19, 2010

"And [Peter] . . . warned . . . them, saying, 'Be saved from this crooked (perverse, wicked, unjust) generation.'" (Acts 2:40 AMP)

The Daily Brief

1. Sestak, Paul score wins as Lincoln faces runoff - Politico

Upstart Senate candidates claimed two stunning victories in primary elections Tuesday night as Pennsylvania Rep. Joe Sestak denied incumbent Democrat Arlen Specter renomination to a sixth term and Kentucky insurgent Rand Paul easily bested establishment favorite Trey Grayson for the Republican Party's Senate nod.

- As the winds of true change begin to blow across our land, by the Spirit of the Living God, pray that these election results and others to follow will cause the mighty to humble themselves and turn to the Lord in sincere repentance. May there be a "clean sweep" of the broom of heaven, moving out the wicked and bringing the righteous into positions of authority. Pray!

- For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another. (Psalm 75:6,7)

2. NYC bomb suspect appears in court - Washington Times

The suspect in a botched car bombing in Times Square appeared in court Tuesday on terrorism and weapons charges for the first time since his arrest two weeks ago, muttering one word about an affidavit on his finances.

- Father, give this man a vision of Jesus while he sits in his prison cell. Isolate every wicked thought under the blood of Jesus and cast them out of his mind. Bring an end to this man wasting his life on terrorism and pull him out of the fire. May he cry out to God in deep, sorrowful repentance and be swept out of a life of sin by accepting Jesus as his own personal savior. In Jesus Name.

- "Keep me as the apple of the eye; hide me under the shadow of the Lord's wings, from the wicked that oppress me, from my deadly enemies, who compass me about." (Psalm 17:8-9)

3. Oil spill closes 19% of Gulf fishing area - Washington Times

Federal officials said Tuesday they're expanding the area of the Gulf of Mexico where fishing is shut down because of a massive oil spill.

- God, cover the waters of the Gulf of Mexico with a mist sent from heaven that will balance out the oil from these waters. By the wondrous works of God who is perfect in knowledge, we simply ask You to perform a miracle and turn this oil into fertile food for all the marine life in this sea. Bring quiet rest to this water by passing Your hand over the gulf and changing the oil back to water. In Jesus Name.

- "Touching the Almighty, we cannot find Him out: He is excellent in power, and in judgment, and in plenty of justice: He will not afflict." (Job 37:23)

4. Congressional report says US repeated 9/11 intel failures in Christmas bomb plot - Fox News

Despite a top-to-bottom overhaul of the intelligence community after the 2001 terrorist attacks, the nation's security system showed some of the same failures when it allowed a would-be bomber to slip aboard an airliner, congressional investigators said Tuesday.

- Lord God, there is a depth of sin and wickedness that to the normal mind is inconceivable. Who are these who darken the nation's security system by words without knowledge at this high level of our security. We ask that You set angels at the gates where the terrorists of death enter. Overrule the loopholes that are allowed by those linked with terrorism in the intelligence community, that the wicked might be shaken out of it. Protect us, God, by Your holy angels. In Jesus Name.

- "But the Lord your God you shall fear; and He shall deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies." (II Kings 17:39)

5. Federal judge says no to Bible at charter school - AP

A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed against the state of Idaho by a charter school that planned to use the Bible as an instructional text.

- God, open this judge's eyes to see that he is resisting the Word of God by stepping into the path and blocking God's will for this school to use the Bible as a text book. Every Word of God is pure. Open his ears to hear the Word of the Lord, for one day he will stand before the Lord Himself and give an account of what he has just ruled on. He is putting his word above God's Word, the Almighty God who reigns above all the earth and heaven. Forgive him, Lord, for he knows not what he has just done. In Jesus Name.

- "For the Word of God is quick and living, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." (Hebrews 4:12)

6. IMF: US Debt Nearing 100 Percent of GDP - NewsMax

The United States' national debt will soon reach 100 percent of gross domestic product, the International Monetary Fund predicts in a new report.

- God, prevail against the hidden government who rules over the world's monetary systems. Stand at the gate and hold back their destructive forces until their time comes. Send forth the heavenly host of angels to cover every door and every entrance where evil comes in to rob, steal and destroy. Block their power that would withhold sufficient resources from the people by the blood of Jesus. Strip and scatter them, so there be no unity among them. Everything under the whole heaven is the Lord's. Hold out Your hand to meet the needs of the people. In Jesus Name.

- "God shall judge the poor of the people, He shall save the children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor." (Psalm 72:4)

7. UN Security Council sanctions draft targets Iran's banks, cargo, arms - Ha'aretz

A United Nations Security Council draft resolution calls for expanding punitive measures against Iran, its banking and other industries for refusing to halt sensitive nuclear activities.

- God, You see this great deception and the lies that continue to come from the leaders in Iran regarding their nuclear activities. We ask that You weaken this enemy force whose goal is to destroy Israel. May their labor be in vain that would bring forth destruction. For among these leaders are found wicked men. They lay wait, as he that set snares; they set a trap, they catch men.

- "To whom shall I speak, and give warning, that they may hear? behold, their ear is uncircumcised, and they cannot hearken: behold, the Word of the Lord is unto them a reproach; they have no delight in it." (Jeremiah 6:10)

8. G-15 for effective monitoring of global financial centers - Hindustan Times

The Group of Fifteen (G-15) developing countries, including India, have called for effective supervision of major financial centers and institutions to prevent repeat of recent global economic crisis which they said had adversely impacted the developing nations.

- Father, we are looking at the nations aligning themselves to bring in one world government. May Your protection be upon the innocent and those who are unaware of the sudden destruction that is attempting to take over the world. Guide us in Your truth and lead us into the shelter of Your everlasting love. Wicked rulers are at the helm and are guiding the world into a cataclysm. Raise up a standard against them, Lord. Send your warring angels to defeat all their deceptive intentions and plans. Set a guard over all the redeemed of the Lord that no evil can touch them. In Jesus Name.

- "So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, and His glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him." (Isaiah 59:19)

Coincidence or prophecy: White House pressure on Israel and disasters for America

Let's take an inventory of catastrophic events of late. On April 4 there were 41 people shot and four killed in 26 hours in Chicago. The West Virginia coal mine disaster on April 5 claimed over two dozen lives. The April 21 explosion on the oil rig killed 11 people and is still a mounting disaster. The IMF Global Financial Stability report on April 25 indicated the European Union was in a deep financial crisis. In April, there was also flooding in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, North Dakota, Rhode Island and Delaware. Floods ravaged Nashville and Memphis Tennessee the week of May 1. The volcano in Iceland on May 11 delayed flights and disrupted weather patterns around the world.

On March 9, Vice President Joe Biden visited Israel. At the same time, Israel's Interior Ministry announced there would be 1,600 new housing units built in East Jerusalem. The White House took great offense to this announcement, although Biden was in Israel to pressure its leadership to restart peace talks with the Palestinians. Palestinian spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh responded by telling reporters, "The American administration must respond to this provocation with actual measures, as it is no longer possible to just turn the other cheek, and massive American pressure is required in order to compel Israel to abandon its peace-destroying behavior."

Since that day, the man who occupies the Oval Office and his administration have embarked on a blistering reprisal toward Israel. The week of March 22 found Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington where there were many meetings with the White House. The White House was pressuring Netanyahu to put Jerusalem on the negotiating table. This prompted Netanyahu to say that "Jerusalem is not a settlement. It's our capital." Israel Today reported the White House was trying to topple the Netanyahu government. Since then, the White House has added pressure, even making Netanyahu leave the White House through the back door by the garbage.

Obama's Iran Disaster

From the first day Barack Obama walked into the Oval Office, he has attempted to reach out to the radical Islamic regime in Iran. He offered them respect, incentives and virtual silence as the tyrants in Tehran crushed dissent. He exchanged private letters with pen pal Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and made it clear to Iran that the "big bad Bush" was gone and diplomacy was now the answer.

His approach has failed miserably. This week Iran delivered the final humiliation. Ahmadinejad outflanked the Obama/Clinton team and struck a deal with Brazil's socialist president "Lula" and Turkey in which Iran will have some of its uranium enriched for "peaceful purposes." The move will make it even more likely that no real economic sanctions will be imposed on Iran by the international community.

Meanwhile, Iran retains enough uranium to make nuclear weapons while it accelerates its efforts to obtain key bomb components, including trigger mechanisms.

What now? Will the White House continue to demand that Israel not act on the growing threat of a nuclear-armed Iran? Will we have another White House summit on nuclear weapons? Sadly, a war is coming to the Middle East sooner rather than later. The only question is who will win. (Gary Bauer; End-of-Day; May 18, 2010)

In Primary, Parties Secondary

After 17 months of the Left's political stampede, voters took their frustration out yesterday by taking incumbents out. In four major state primaries, both parties took a beating--suggesting that, come November, Americans plan to hold all of Congress accountable. They bounced members from both sides of the aisle in an angry wave that some people mistakenly construed as anti-Democrat. It's not. Tuesday's results are an emphatic reminder that the Democrats' loss isn't necessarily the Republicans' gain.

One look at Kentucky's returns ought to show that the GOP Establishment is losing steam, not gaining it. Despite being backed by the most powerful Republican in all of Congress, Trey Grayson's bid for the GOP Senate nomination completely imploded. With virtually no political experience, Rand Paul won in a 24-point blowout, forcing Greyson into an early concession speech. Paul, son of Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), told an elated crowd, "I have a message from the Tea Party . . . We have come to take our government back."

The drubbing continued in Pennsylvania. Eighty-year-old Sen. Arlen Specter (D) switched parties to avoid retirement--only to be forced into it. By more than 74,000 votes, Rep. Joe Sestak (D) sent the thirty-year Senate vet packing. "My change in party will enable me to be reelected," Sen. Specter said last year. It turns out that a change in priorities would have served him better.

Meanwhile, his colleague of 12 years, Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.), hasn't lost her seat--yet. A prime target for supporting ObamaCare, Sen. Lincoln was forced into a win-or-go-home runoff against Lt. Gov. Bill Halter (D) on June 8. Like Specter, she's learning the hard way that the President's priorities are not the American people's.

One of the more interesting fallouts from Super Tuesday was a special election for Rep. John Murtha's (D-Pa.) seat. Although Democrats are clinging to the victory, it isn't a victory for the President's agenda. Mark Critz won the job by almost 10 points, but he succeeded because he ran away from the leadership's platform--not on it. "I opposed the health care bill," he said in a debate. "I'm pro-life and pro-gun. That's not liberal." And neither is the electorate. More than anything, this primary was a stinging referendum on Washington's leadership. But Republicans beware. This November, the candidates standing on principle may be the only ones left standing. (Family Research Council)

Kagan Led to the Slaughter

Let the Supreme Court debate begin--officially on June 28, says Judiciary Chair Pat Leahy (D-Vt.). After receiving a 200-page response to the Senate questionnaire, the Committee has decided to kick off the Elena Kagan hearings next month. But the occasion won't be without controversy--even from the Chairman's own party. House Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.) weighed in on the other chamber's business. In a letter to Sen. Leahy, she pounced on Kagan's abortion views, arguing that some of her work for President Clinton throws into doubt her commitment to the culture of death. "As Co-Chair of the Pro-Choice Caucus, I urge you and the Committee to keep the constitutional right to choose at the forefront of your minds as you question Solicitor General Kagan," she wrote. "Many of our rights were eroded during the previous administration. For that reason, it's especially important that the next Supreme Court Justice take a strong position on protecting a woman's right to choose. It's my hope that the Senate will respectfully ask Elena Kagan for her views on this critical topic." (Family Research Council)

Hawaii Governor "Weighs" Same-Sex Union Law

Gov. Lingle, Lei Down the Law!

It's been three weeks since Hawaiian leaders stunned the state by slipping a civil union bill through the legislature in the last day of the legislative session. H.B. 444's unlikely journey ended on Gov. Linda Lingle's desk, where it still sits today. The Governor, whose opposition to same-sex "marriage" is well documented, said she needed time to weigh the issue. This weekend, she spoke about that process. "It does appear to me on reading it, that it really is same-sex 'marriage,' but by a different name," Gov. Lingle told reporters. "But," she said, "I want to wait and hear people out." Well, she shouldn't have to wait long! Get involved today by contacting the Governor's office (phone: 808-286-0034). Urge her to veto a bil l that would undermine the will of the people, the meaning of marriage, and the letter of the law. (Family Research Council)

The Good News Corner

American Minute: May 19, 1588

Defeat of the Spanish Armada

The invincible Spanish Armada set sail MAY 19, 1588, to conquer England. Queen Elizabeth relied on Sir Francis Drake and his smaller, faster vessels. Drake ingeniously floated burning ships at night into the anchored Spanish fleet, dispersing them in a panic. Aided by gale force winds half of Spain's Armada was eventually wrecked. Had England lost, there would have been no Pilgrims, no New England, and no United States.

In 1776, Adam Smith wrote in The Wealth of Nations:

"The Spaniards, by virtue of the first discovery, claimed all America as their own, and such was the terror of their name, that the greater part of the other nations of Europe were afraid to establish themselves in any other part of that great continent.

But the defeat of their Invincible Armada put it out of their power to obstruct any longer the settlements of the other European nations.

In the course of the 17th century, English, French, Dutch, Danes, and Swedes attempted to make some settlements in the new world."

A coin minted in Holland in 1588 had engraved on one side Spanish ships sinking and on the other side men kneeling under the inscription:

"Man Proposeth, God Disposeth."

[Editor's note: Sometimes GOOD NEWS can have such an impact, that its legacy will live on for centuries. Thank the Lord today for the ingenuity of Sir Francis Drake, whose clever scheme sank the Spanish Armada and opened the way for the true Gospel of Jesus Christ to make its way to the New World from the other nations in Europe. Praise God!]
