The Daily Brief - Friday, May 21, 2010

"And [Peter] . . . warned . . . them, saying, 'Be saved from this crooked (perverse, wicked, unjust) generation.'" (Acts 2:40 AMP)

The Daily Brief

1. Evangelical Group Launches Effort to Curb Abortions - NewsMax

In an effort to pursue common ground toward reducing the number of abortions in the United States, the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE), representing 40 denominations, scores of evangelical organizations and millions of American evangelicals, on Thursday announced a new initiative focusing on respecting sex and respecting life. The NAE Generation Forum will explore practical and realistic approaches to curtail the high abortion rate in this country. Particular focus will be placed on young adults since they, not teenagers, have the majority of abortions.

• Lord, we continue to ask forgiveness for the innocent blood spilled out in this nation. Thank you for those reaching out to open the hearts of men and women that the gift of life was already formed even before the earth was known. We pray that eyes and hearts will open toward compassion for life.

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. (Ephesians. 2:10)

2. Senate passes massive bank reform bill - Washington Times

Prodded by national anger at Wall Street, the Senate on Thursday passed the most far-reaching restraints on big banks since the Great Depression. In its broad sweep, the massive bill would touch Wall Street CEOs and first-time home buyers, high-flying traders and small town lenders.

• Pray in the Spirit over every aspect of this massive bill, so it will be applied only in the manner that will be a blessing to the people.

Finally brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may run swiftly and be glorified, just as it is with you. And that we me be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men for not all have faith. But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one. (2 Thessalonians 3:1-3)

3. Oil giant BP concedes Gulf spill is bigger than estimated - USA Today

Oil giant BP conceded Thursday that the Gulf of Mexico oil leak is larger than it originally estimated, adding more worry as portions of the massive spill began trickling ashore for the first time.

• Pray for the protection of the areas involved and the waters surrounding this leak, that it will be contained in its hole like that of a hand held shovel. We know as measures are being decided to burn areas, and people must take precautions, we ask for your divine hand upon the people.

Then you shall swell with joy; Because the abundance of the sea shall be turned to you, The wealth of the Gentiles shall come to you. (Isaiah 60:5)

4. Replica Cross in Mojave Desert Comes Down - ABC News

A replica of a cross honoring America's war dead that drew the attention of the U.S. Supreme Court before it was stolen this month mysteriously appeared Thursday in a Mojave Desert federal park, but officials said it was illegal and took it down.

• Lord, honoring you is what we love to do. Battles are fought but we will always thank you for the battle you fought for us on that cross and won. It can never be taken away.

Then Jesus said, Father, "Forgive them, for they do not know what they do." ( Luke 23:34)

5. Iran Says Can Destroy Israel Within Week - NewsMax

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's chief of staff, Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei, said Wednesday that if Israel attacked Iran it would be destroyed within a week.

• Lord, those that render such ruthlessness learn quickly they must surrender to the one nation established by you. One week, nor one day or hour, will be destroyed because it is your nation and none other.

Let all those who hate Zion Be put to shame and turned back. Let them be as the "grass on the housetops; Which withers before it grows up, With which the reaper does not fill his hand, Nor he who binds sheaves his arms.Neither let those who pass by them say, The blessing of the Lord be upon you; We bless you in the name of the Lord!" ( Psalm 129: 5-8)

6. US, Britain and Germany to discuss debt crisis - AP

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will confer with finance officials in Britain and Germany next week about ways to restore global confidence in the financial system.

• As they gather together to discuss the financial matters of global debt, let them consider their purposes and plans will only repeat themselves due to past decisions that have not been corrected of frivolous spending and reckless management.

And you shall remember the Lord your God, For it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers as it is this day. Then it shall be, if you by any means forget the Lord your God, and follow other gods, and serve them and worship them, "I testify against you this day that shall surely perish. (Deuteronomy 8:18,19)

7. Iran's Nuclear Plant May Be Operational Soon - VOA

Russia's top nuclear official says Iran's first nuclear plant should be operational by August despite efforts to impose a fourth round of U.N. sanctions on Tehran.

• Lord, we pray the sanctions imposed become swift, and that the United States and Congress say NO to this act of defiance against all nations as well as Israel.

Keep my soul and deliver me, Let me not be ashamed, for I put my trust in You. Let my integrity and uprightness preserve me. For I wait for You. Redeem Israel, O God, Out of all their troubles!. (Psalm 26: 20 - 22)

The Daily Jot

Usurping the Law for Personal Gain and Political Power

The mayor of San Francisco has said that San Francisco should not do business with Arizona because of the state's new illegal alien law. The Columbus Dispatch reports that Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman is banning city workers from traveling to Arizona on government business. Coleman's spokesman says the mayor "agrees with those who want to send a message to the state of Arizona that this not the American way." The mayor's ban does not extend, however, to the Arizona company that owns and operated some 20 red light cameras in Columbus or the purchase of 20 more of the money generating devices--must be the American way getting in the way.

It already has been documented that senior officials in the Obama administration are condemning the bill, but have not read it. They claim that it is un-American to protect the borders of this country if it means that people have to prove they are here legally. The motivation for crying foul for the elected Democratic officials throughout the nation is clearly vote buying over national security concerns. The entire amnesty concept is that the poor class of illegal aliens entering the United States will become so dependent on government entitlements that they will always vote for the political party that keeps the spigot open on the flow of taxpayer funded milk and honey.

The leftists that refuse to secure America's borders claim their belief is based in the Bible interpreted as "social justice." They say the Bible says to treat strangers with love. There are over 120 mentions of how to deal with "strangers", also interpreted as "aliens," in the Bible. Using quotes from the Bible, naïve evangelical Christians are buying into the dogma that illegal immigration is Biblical. They quote verses like Leviticus 19:34, "But the stranger that dwells with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and you shall love him as yourself." But they conveniently ignore that the Lord, in instructing how to treat aliens in the Bible, repeatedly commands that the aliens embrace and live by the laws of nation .

Exodus 12:49 says, "One law shall be to him that is home born, and unto the alien that sojourns among you." Leviticus 19:26 says, "You shall therefore keep my statutes and my judgments, and shall not commit any of these abominations; neither any of your own nation, nor any alien that sojourns among you." Leviticus 24:22 says, "You shall have one manner of law, as well for the alien, as for one of your own country: For I am the Lord your God." There are many more such references. It appears that requiring people to be in America legally is repulsive to liberal office holders. It makes one wonder who among them has usurped the laws of the nation to get where they are and to stay there.

Mexico And Obama vs. Arizona

Yesterday, I watched the disgusting spectacle of Mexico's President Felipe Calderon condemning Arizona for its new anti-illegal immigration law from the White House Rose Garden. Worse yet, I watched as our own president not only didn't defend his country - he joined Calderon in kicking Americans fed-up with illegal immigration and open borders. Did Obama forget for a second that he was President of the United States of America? Did Obama forget that it is his job to defend this country?

After his outrageous bows to the Saudi king and the Japanese emperor, and his repeated apologies for America to various audiences around the world, I would have thought that someone at the White House with some public relations sense would have spoken up and suggested that perhaps the immigration issue and Arizona's popular new law ought to be avoided in public. Instead, the president continued the pattern of denigrating his own country in front of foreign leaders.

Unfortunately, Calderon wasn't satisfied with bashing Arizona from the White House lawn. He did it again before a joint session of Congress today, at which point Biden, Nancy Pelosi and Democrat members of Congress all jumped up and offered a standing ovation! (The hypocrisy is unbelievable. Click here to learn how Mexico deals with illegal immigration.)

How out-of-touch can the political elites be? The overwhelming majority of the American people support Arizona's law. It's not about racism, but the rule of law and homeland security in a post-9/11 world.

By the way, Obama repeated his solution to the problem of illegal immigration - he's going to crack down on businesses who hire illegal aliens. So if you're an employer and you know the brute force of Big Government is going to come down hard on you, what are you supposed to do? How are you supposed to tell whether a prospective employee is a legal citizen? That's right - you will ASK FOR PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP - the very thing that has led Obama and so many liberal politicians to condemn the Arizona law! (Gary Bauer; End-of-Day; May 20, 2010)

"Rule Of Law" Cities

You've heard about the sanctuary cities that refuse to enforce our immigration laws. If you're an illegal alien and can get to San Francisco, you're home free. Here's a new term I hope you'll be hearing a lot more often - "Rule of Law" cities.

Costa Mesa, California, has elected officials who evidently understand that the oath of office they take requires them to enforce the laws of the United States. In response to the boycotts against Arizona, Mayor Alan Mansoor sponsored a resolution declaring Costa Mesa a "Rule of Law City." Mansoor said, "I have a lot of concerns with cities calling themselves sanctuary cities. It's important we state that we do not support illegal immigration." His resolution passed 4-to-0.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if politicians that pander to leftwing amnesty activists would instead get pounded by folks like you demanding they stand up for the rule of law? Call your local mayor's office and ask that your town declare itself a "Rule of Law City." (Gary Bauer; End-of-Day; May 20, 2010)

Bashing Big Oil And Small Business

In their eagerness to bash British Petroleum, Husssein Obama and congressional Democrats are considering legislation to dramatically increase the liability of companies that drill for oil offshore to $10 billion. I don't think anyone doubts that BP should shoulder the clean-up costs of the Gulf Coast oil spill. BP has promised to pay all legitimate claims and it is reportedly offering Gulf Coast states tens of millions of dollars to help promote tourism.

But the liberal impulse to bash Big Business often has unintended consequences that punish small businesses in the process. In this case, by raising the liability of companies so high in their haste to punish BP, Democrats are guaranteeing that big companies like BP will be the only companies drilling in the Gulf because they'll be the only ones who can afford to risk billions.

Few, if any, smaller oil companies will be willing to risk an accident that could subject them to billions of dollars in penalties. I wouldn't be surprised in the days ahead to hear that BP and other big oil companies endorse the Democrats' liability plan, because it will guarantee them a monopoly on offshore drilling. But the Left is so driven by its anti-free market ideology that it rarely allows basic commonsense economics to interfere with scoring political points. (Gary Bauer; End-of-Day; May 20, 2010)

Emergency Prayer Alert-KYRGYZSTAN

WIN PRAYER ALERT

A state of emergency was declared in Kyrgyzstan after two people were killed and 50 others injured in street riots. A curfew was also imposed in the city of Jalalabad after thousands of protesters assaulted an Uzbek university.

Demonstrations in April 2010 forced President Kurmanbek Bakiyev to leave the country. At least 85 people were killed and the interim government that succeeded him immediately accused the former president of ordering police to open fire on protesters, resulting in the massacre.

With Bakiyev hiding in Belarus, violence continues to erupt, especially in the southern part of the nation.

On May 19, 2010, a group of ethnic Kyrgyz numbering in the thousands stormed an Uzbek university. The mob was reportedly "demanding the arrest of an Uzbek community leader they accuse of inciting racial tension."

Shots were fired and later approximately 1,500 Uzbeks carrying clubs marched into the center of Jalalabad. A curfew was imposed and security forced were called in to to restore order.

A state of emergency has been declared in southern Kyrgyzstan and interim leader, Roza Otunbayeva has publically condemned the events, promising actions will be taken to prevent further violence.

PRAY FOR:

• the Lord to guide the interim government in restoring order quickly and keeping the people of Kyrgyzstan safe during this time of political and ethnic turmoil. (Psalm 61:3)

• Kyrgyz and Uzbeks to discuss their differences and strive to live in harmony with each other. (Romans 12:16)

• Believers to boldly share the Gospel, proclaiming and demonstrating the love of God and illustrating the blessing of forgiveness and peace. ( Ephesians 1:7)

• the Lord to raise up leaders who will serve the people of Kyrgyzstan with integrity. (Daniel 2:21)

• this time of instability to be used to turn hearts and minds to the salvation available only in Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 1:18)

• the Kingdom of God to come to Kyrgyzstan in great power. (Matthew 6:10)

The Good News Corner

Congressman Introduces Pro-Life Fix to Health Care Law

Rep. Joe Pitts, R-Penn., has introduced legislation intended to remove abortion funding from health care reform.

Ashley Horne, federal policy analyst for Focus on the Family Action, said the Protect Life Act would apply the Hyde Amendment, the statute that keeps tax dollars from paying for abortions in other federal programs.

"It would guarantee that your tax dollars won't subsidize plans that cover elective abortion," she said, "and also protect providers' medical rights of conscience, if they do not want to participate in abortions."

Horne said the bill would make the reform law pro-life, something that liberals in Congress refused to do during the health care debate, even though Americans made their wishes known. "Polls have consistently shown," she said, "that Americans do not want their tax dollars being used to pay for abortions." (CitizenLink)
