The Daily Brief - Wednesday, October 13, 2010

"Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigns." (Rev. 19:6)

The Daily Brief

1. Chilean Mine Rescue Under Way - ABC News

Men Emerging One-by-One After 10 Weeks Trapped

Throughout the day today, 33 Chilean miners have ascended, one-by-one, to freedom from the underground chamber where they and their colleagues have been entombed for 10 long weeks.

- As the whole world has been watching this story, we rejoice with millions at the safe and successful rescue of these 33 brave men, many of whom have fallen upon their knees -- in front of the TV cameras - in adoration of our Savior for their safe return. May the witness of their faith and courage lead many to find the source of our strength: our new life in Jesus Christ, our Lord.

- "Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress." (Psalm 107:13)

2. Judge orders 'don't ask, don't tell' injunction - AP

A federal judge issued a worldwide injunction Tuesday immediately stopping enforcement of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy, suspending the 17-year-old ban on openly gay U.S. troops. U.S. District Judge Virginia Phillips' landmark ruling also ordered the government to suspend and discontinue all pending discharge proceedings and investigations under the policy. Read more.

- Father God, this judge's worldwide injunction is a direct confrontation to the Word of God and she is shaking her angry fist in the face of God by spreading her edict across the world. Father, we call forth myriads of angels to pull down the power and effect of every word spoken from her mouth and bring total defeat that her words be dead and fall to the ground. Reverse this curse off our military, and hold fast the high standards that have protected them from this lifestyle. In Jesus Name.

- "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools. And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men, working that which is unseemly, shameful and indecent." (Romans 1:18, 22-27)

3. Obama Administration Appeals Gay Marriage Ruling - ABC News

The Obama administration decided on Tuesday to appeal a judge's rulings that prevented the U.S. government from banning same-sex marriages, a move that could undermine support among President Barack Obama's traditional liberal base ahead of a key election.

- Whatever the motive may be on the part of this administration in taking this action, pray that this appeal will meet with success.

- "The LORD is far from the wicked but he hears the prayer of the righteous." (Proverbs 15:29)

4. All 50 States Join to Probe 'Foreclosure Mess' - Fox News

Attorneys general in all U.S. states are joining forces in an investigation to 'get to the bottom of this foreclosure mess,' and determine whether mortgage firms broke laws by signing off on documents foreclosing on hundreds of thousands of homes.

- Lift up this coalition in prayer, that they be granted "wisdom from above" to bring immediate correction to this growing crisis. Pray!

- "If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him." (James1:5)

5. US Cities Face Half a Trillion Dollars of Pension Deficits - CNBC

Big US cities could be squeezed by unfunded public pensions as they and counties face a $574 billion funding gap, a study to be released on Tuesday shows.

- The news about our economy seems to grow worse with each passing day. For the believer, we can find comfort that the Lord will provide -- in spite of all evidence to the contrary. But for the unsaved, this is a different story. Pray that this economic "wake up call" will cause many to fall upon their knees, seeking help. Our help is in the Name of the Lord. Amen.

- "Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress." (Psalm 107:13)

6. Mexican investigator in Falcon Lake case beheaded, officials say - CNN

The lead Mexican investigator in the Falcon Lake case, Rolando Armando Flores Villegas, has been killed, his severed head delivered Tuesday in a suitcase to the Mexican military, officials told CNN.

- This news is almost too horrible to report, but prayer is needed, and our omniscient God knows all. Pray that the perpetrator of this crime is found quickly, and pray for strength and courage for the Mexican authorities as they continue to pursue the gangs that are terrorizing our border. Pray!

- "For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open." (Mark 4:22)

7. Muslim Brotherhood 'declares war' on U.S. - WND

Five years before the 9/11 attacks, al-Qaida declared war on America, the West, Christians and Jews -- and virtually no one noticed. Read more.

- Offer a chorus of praise that the Muslim Brotherhood, unknown to most of us until recently, is now being exposed. This global Muslim Mafia needs to be dismantled and its works destroyed . . . a victory only achieved through targeted intercessory prayer. Pray in the Spirit over this report, for the details are too many to comprehend; and pray for the salvation of these wicked, lost souls. Pray!

- "The effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." (James 5:16)

The Daily Jot

Like Esau, US sells Texas oil fields to China

The Houston Chronicle reports that state-owned Chinese energy giant CNOOC is buying a $2.2 billion stake in 600,000 acres of South Texas oil and gas fields, potentially testing the political waters for further expansion into US energy reserves. The Chesapeake Oil properties eventually could produce up to half a million barrels a day of oil equivalent. To put this in perspective, the Energy Information Administration estimates that China accounts for some 10% of the world's oil consumption, using about nine million barrels a day, while the US uses about 19 million barrels a day. That the current Administration would even consider allowing this sale is tantamount to a breech in the national security of the United States.

There is every indication that China is using its tremendous bonanza in trading with the United States to vastly increase its military capabilities. Each year, Congress requires the Defense Department to give an in-depth report of China's military and security developments. The 2010 report says, "Over the past 30 years, China has made great progress in its pursuit of economic growth and development, which has allowed China to achieve higher living standards for the Chinese people and has increased China's international profile. These economic achievements, combined with progress in science and technology, have also enabled China to embark on a comprehensive transformation of its military."

The report quotes the current US President as saying "[the U.S.-China] relationship has not been without disagreement and difficulty. But the notion that we must be adversaries is not pre-destined." But China's secrecy and cancellation of cooperation with the US on military matters indicates otherwise. The New York Times recently reported: "All militaries need a straw man, a perceived enemy, for solidarity," said Huang Jing, a scholar of China's military and leadership at the National University of Singapore. "Chinese military men, from the soldiers and platoon captains all the way up to the army commanders, were always taught that America would be their enemy."

Regarding the oil sale, Aubrey McClendon, CEO of Chesapeake Oil, says, "The initial feedback we're getting is that this is something the government should be very happy to see, which is the return of American capital into our country so that we can use it to create high-paying American jobs and also reduce oil imports a few years down the road." But short term gains in exchange for long term consequences is a bad deal. Consider Genesis 25:34 where Esau sold his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of soup: "Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: Thus Esau despised his birthright." And a nation was born from Jacob and Esau is all but a footnote.

Pregnancy Centers Under Attack

More Morning Sickness for Pregnancy Centers

In the latest attack against Pregnancy Resource Centers (PRC), today the New York Times ran a biased article praising a new piece of anti-life legislation that would require PRCs to post signs at their building's entrance and in the PRC waiting rooms with the message that the center does not provide abortions or contraceptives. This anti-life bill, introduced by New York City Councilwoman Jessica Lappin and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, is based upon a false NARAL New York "report" about PRCs. Similar legislation has been passed in Maryland and Texas, but legislation that was introduced in Virginia was ultimately withdrawn due to lack of support.

The reality is that PRCs are desperately needed in New York City, which has an abortion rate three times higher than the national average. Unlike NARAL or Planned Parenthood, PRCs help to reduce abortions by supporting women facing unplanned pregnancies with practical free help and support. PRCs provide a tremendous positive service to the local community-nationally, these centers serve nearly two million people annually; 29 of every 30 people working in the centers are volunteers. This is yet another example of those on the left using the power of the government to silence those who oppose their agenda. (Family Research Council)

Stem Cells in the News

Embryonic Gushing vs. Adult Stem Cell Success

The media have gushed over a press release by Geron, giving notice that they had injected the first spinal cord injury patient with cells made from embryonic stem cells (ESC). But even proponents of embryonic stem cells have expressed concern over the rush to begin these experiments on patients. The potential for tumors is real, and probably why Geron has committed to monitoring patients for 15 years. They also know from studies using rats that ESC don't work beyond 1-2 weeks after injury.

This raises the questionable practice of asking vulnerable, newly-injured people to expose themselves to a dangerous experiment. Are the patients told that many show some spontaneous improvement in the first few months? The only real certainty in this human experiment is that Geron's stock price has shot up.

The other certain fact is that Adult Stem Cells have already helped spinal cord injury patients, even up to 15 years after injury. The documented science was presented recently to the U.S. Senate. Rather than risking lives with ethically-problematic experiments, why are the media ignoring real success? Why not put the patients first? Patients like Laura Dominguez have already experienced the life-changing benefits of adult stem cells. (Family Research Council)

Quoting George Soros --

Billionaire Soros Confesses 'I Can't Stop a Republican 'Avalanche'

In yet another demoralizing statement for Democrats, liberal billionaire George Soros told The New York Times on Friday that he was in no position to stop the Republican "avalanche" on Nov. 2.

When asked if he was concerned about a potential GOP takeover, he said: "I think they are pushing the wrong policies, but I'm not in a position to stop it. I don't believe in standing in the way of an avalanche."

Claiming he made an exception in recent years, the 80-year-old activist said he will instead give money to liberal causes -- including domestic and global health care and environmental initiatives:

"Since I didn't succeed in 2004, I remained engaged in 2006 and 2008. But I'm basically not a party man. I'd just been forced into that situation by what I considered the excesses of the Bush administration."

Soros' actions appear to contradict his actions. The billionaire is said to have donated $48 million to "alter the composition of America's state courts," federal and state liberal candidates, as well as a targeted campaign to discredit the Tea Party movement. (CitizenLink)

GOOD NEWS IN CHILE

Two Chilean Miners Accept Christ While Still Trapped Underground

"This has been a testimony to what the Lord can do in a person's life. Those that are the children of the Lord have been those that have shown, even in the midst of the storm, a testimony of peace, tranquility and trust in the Lord."

(Santiago, Chile)-As most of the world knows, 33 Chilean miners have been trapped underground for more than two months, waiting to be rescued. On Tuesday, the rescues were finally able to begin.

Baptist Press News reports that when the mine collapsed, three of the miners-including José Henríquez who has been leading a Bible study underground-were Christians. Since then, two more of them have made professions of faith.

Rescue engineer Igor Bravo, a member of First Baptist Church of Santiago, was reportedly one of the first to hear of Henríquez's request for a pastor and contacted the Chilean Baptist Union.

Bernardino Morales, director of the Baptist union's Social Testimony Network, called Marcelo Leiva, pastor of Vallenar Baptist Church in Vallenar, Chile, located about two hours away and told him, "Pastor, it's either you, or it's you."

The report notes that when Leiva arrived at Camp Hope-the camp set up near the buried mine-he didn't know anyone, but Henríquez's family quickly connected him with other families.

"That [connection] allowed a lot of other people to hear the Word," Leiva says, "and to know that in the midst of this catastrophe, God is in control, and it is the Lord who has kept their family members alive."

According to the report, the wife of one of the miners who became a Christian since being trapped in the mine met with Leiva over the past two weeks and also accepted Christ.

Thief Repents after His Victim Reads the Bible to Him

(South Korea)-A report from Metro News U.K. says a thief repented after his victim read the Bible to him.

As the story goes, a man named Ling Cho entered an empty classroom and stole a purse from a teacher who taught at the English Language Institute in Ulsan Jungbu. He also threatened her with a knife and demanded money from her.

The teacher reportedly asked why he was robbing her and then listened as he explained his personal and financial problems to her. Then she read out of the Bible to him.

The thief subsequently apologized and left. According to the report, he returned in tears about twenty minutes later asking that the teacher turn him in to the police. When she didn't do as he asked, he turned himself in.

Cho may receive a five-year jail sentence for attempted robbery. Source: Staff - Metro News, U.K. and Breaking Christian News
