The Daily Brief - Friday, September 2, 2011

"You will also declare a thing, And it will be established for you; So light will shine on your ways." (Job 22:28)

PLEASE BEGIN PRAYING NOW FOR CONGRESS, AS THEY RETURN NEXT WEEK.
We will stand down on Monday, Labor Day, but will publish our next edition
of "On Capitol Hill This Week" on Tuesday, September 6.

The Daily Brief

1. Study Points to WTC Cancer Link - Wall Street Journal

Firefighters who worked at Ground Zero are 19% more likely to have cancer than their colleagues who did not work at the site, according to newly published research that could pave the way for government payments to those suffering from some types of cancer.

- Father, as we approach the 10th anniversary of this awful day in our history, we think of those "first-responders, who risked life and limb trying to save as many people as possible, and many of them did lose their lives trying to rescue others. We thank you for their bravery and courage, and we ask you to now protect them from the effects of their exposure to these environmental carcinogens that would seek to end their lives prematurely. We ask you to strengthen their immune systems and give them wisdom regarding lifestyle choices they can make, to lessen their chances of contracting this awful disease. Protect them we pray, in the strong name of Yeshua, and bring healing to those already effected. Amen.

- "And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people." (Matt. 4:23)

2. US Economy: No new jobs added in August - BBC

The US economy added no net new jobs in August, according to the key non-farm payrolls figures from the Department of Labor. The previous month's figure was revised downwards - it now shows that 85,000 jobs were created, down from 117,000 in the previous estimate. The August number was much worse than had been expected - the predicted figure was an addition of about 70,000.

b) White House: US Unemployment To Stay High Through 2012 - VOA News

White House economists predicted Thursday that U.S. unemployment will stay at or near its present level throughout next year. They also say that economic growth will be slower than previously projected.

- Abba, we know that many people are suffering from the "failed policies" of this administration, economically. We thank you that you did promise to meet the needs of your children, who call upon you and seek your face. We thank you for your mercy. We do ask, Lord, for those who are without work, that you will comfort them and give them wisdom, and creativity, and direction to find the jobs that are available to them. In some cases, they may need to temporarily do other work that is not in their chosen field, but would feed their families. If that is necessary, we ask you to enable them to humble themselves and do what is necessary. Meanwhile, we know that Mr. Obama plans to give a "jobs" speech this week. We ask that you reveal the secret things, and not allow any deception to undermine those seeking employment. Thank you that you do watch over your Word to perform it! May many turn to you and receive your grace, and help in their time of trouble. Amen.

- "Now therefore, our God, the great, mighty, and terrible God, Who keeps covenant and mercy and loving- kindness, let not all the trouble and hardship seem little to You--the hardship that has come upon us" (Neh. 9:32)

3.US 'to sue a dozen banks over housing bubble mortgages' - BBC

The US is planning to sue more than a dozen major banks for misrepresenting the quality of mortgages they sold during the housing bubble, the New York Times reports.

- Lord, we are not sure we know all the details concerning this lawsuit. We do pray that you would bring the truth to light. Expose any works of darkness here on both sides. We pray for truth to prevail, for integrity and justice to come forth, and we ask, that in your wisdom, you will bring this all to a just conclusion for your glory and for the good of the people. Amen!

- "Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts; And in the hidden part You wilt make me to know wisdom." (Psalm 51:6)

4. Obama Approval Hits New Lows - VOA News

Obama's approval ratings have hit new lows.A Quinnipiac poll released Thursday puts Obama's overall job disapproval rating at a record 52 percent, with 42 percent in favor of his performance. Congressional leaders fare even worse in the ratings. Meanwhile, nearly two-thirds of Americans surveyed for a CNN/ORC poll say they disapprove of the Obama's handling of the economy.

- Father, we bring this man to You, asking that You reveal Yourself to him. May he have an Isaiah 6 experience . . . seeing You, the only true God, and humble himself before You . . .that You may lift him up. We pray that he may come to know You, experientially, Whom to know rightly, is life eternal. May he care more about Your opinion of him, than what other people think. And, as he knows You, and beholds You in your Word, he will be transformed into the man You created him to be. Reveal Yourself, and Your love for/to him. May he find his true purpose in You. Amen!

-"Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, Jehovah of hosts." (Isa. 6:5)

5. Louisiana declares emergency as storm brews - BBC

Louisiana has declared a state of emergency as it prepares for a tropical depression to bring up to 15in (38cm) of rain over the weekend. Tropical Depression 13 - to be named Lee if upgraded, as expected, to a tropical storm - is creeping north through the Gulf of Mexico. Offshore platforms for Exxon Mobil, BP and Shell were shut down on Thursday.

- Father, we come against a "spirit of fear" that has enveloped so many after the recent earthquakes, tornadoes, and hurricane Irene. We pray that these in the path of the storm, may use wisdom, and prepare to protect their lives and property. We ask for your protection of the oil rigs in the Gulf. We also pray that these individuals would also cry out to you for your protection, and find their rest and peace in you! Amen.

- "He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall remain stable and fixed under the shadow of the Almighty, Whose power no foe can withstand. I will say of the Lord, He is my Refuge and my Fortress, my God; on Him I lean and rely, and in Him I confidently trust!" (Ps. 91:1,2)

6. Tsunami warning for Alaska's Aleutians after quake - Yahoo News

A tsunami warning was in effect Friday morning for parts of the Aleutian Islands after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake was recorded in the Pacific Ocean. The earthquake struck at about 6:55 a.m. EDT, and there were no initial reports of injuries or damage, according to the United States Geological Survey.

- Father, we thank You that no one was injured in this quake, and that there is no known damage. We pray that any people in the path of this tsunami would quickly evacuate to higher ground, and their lives be spared. It seems that the whole earth is quaking and convulsing in anticipation of the Prince of Peace's soon return. As these things continue to happen, we ask for a revival to sweep our nation, and the islands of the sea, that many, many may come to know you. You are our Peace! Amen.

- "Who shut up the sea behind doors when I fixed limits for it and set its doors and bars in place, when I said, 'This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt'?" (Job 38:10,11)

7. URGENT: Katia Regains Hurricane Strength - Fox News

Abba, we thank you that you are watching this storm and that, as their Creator, the winds and the waves must obey you. We ask that you direct the path this storm takes, and protect those in its path. Again, may they cry out to you for wisdom and protection. May they run to you, and not from you. Amen.

- "Thus says the Lord, Who gives the sun for a light by day and the fixed order of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, Who stirs up the sea's roaring billows or stills the waves when they roar--the Lord of hosts is His name." (Jer. 31:35)

Christian outreach at the heart of Ramadan

Wednesday was the last day of August. It was the last day of Ramadan, the Islamic holiday. It most certainly is the day that if anyone in the village was wondering who is a Moslem, it is not a secret any longer. The main mosque, just recently built, was dedicated with the speakers blasting prayers to allah and accolades to Mohammed. Traffic was heavy with Moslems rushing to the mosque. Some were in such hurry that they drove up the middle of the road against traffic, or even on the wrong side of the road. Dozens walked along the streets. A sad picture of the wide road to hell and the rush to get there.

Our missionary team went to the local government-run hospital to preach the word and pray for the sick. The administrator, a Christian, told us that not so many were there because of the Ramadan holiday. Nonetheless, many were grateful for the prayers, some followed us out wanting more prayer for their children, who were fevered, likely suffering from malaria. Unless you see it, it is really difficult to imagine how, in an area where there is not much hope, so much hope is given by a Bible verse, a testimony, a kind word, the laying on of hands with an effectual prayer. Its the ingredients of miracles. While the Moslems were bobbing up and down in fervent prayer to a false god, our ministry students were hearing a teaching on the fear of God and how it is the first step to a loving relationship with our Father in heaven. They were preparing to show the love of God to those in the village. It is important to show that love to those who do not know the one true God, as 1 John 4:18 says, "perfect love casts out all fear." It is the great equalizer to all those who are taught of a god that rules by fear and intimidation. There is great contrast between salt and light, and fear and darkness.

Prepared in word and in prayer, the afternoon outreach was to begin. We had invited the village children to the local hospital to be fed. It began promptly at 3:00 pm. Worship was first. The kids, about 15 of them from two years old to maybe 12, were raising their hands and clapping and praising the Lord. Then more came in. And they kept coming as the Bible lesson was given. And they kept coming as there was more singing after the lesson. Many of them got up and gave testimonies or quoted scripture. And they kept coming, until we had fed over 100 of them. It was an outpouring of love, a great contrast to the oppression of Islam. You didn't have to point it out, it was evident.

Have a Blessed and Powerful Day!

40 Days of Prayer for Israel

August 30 - October 10

Prayer Points (Part Four)

The sponsor of this call to fasting and prayer for Israel, The Elijah Prayer Army, has posted 15 specific prayer targets during this fast, with Scriptures included. Please find below the final four prayer targets on this list.

You may also wish to view the entire list of prayer targets by going here.

- Pray that Israel will hope in the LORD!

"No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength. A horse is a vain hope for deliverance; despite all its great strength it cannot save. But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love, to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine. We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. May your unfailing love be with us, LORD, even as we put our hope in you." (Ps 33:16-22)

- Pray that the Spirit of God will be poured out so that Israel will look up and see the one that was pierced for them and repent!

"On that day I will set out to destroy all the nations that attack Jerusalem. And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son." (Zech 12:9-10)

- Pray that God's name will be glorified in all the earth through the restoration of Israel!

"Let them see your zeal for your people and be put to shame; . . . You have enlarged the nation, O LORD; you have enlarged the nation. You have gained glory for yourself; you have extended all the borders of the land." (Isa 26:11,15)

- Pray for a mighty harvest into the kingdom of God in the Moslem world!

"The Root of Jesse will spring up, one who will arise to rule over the nations; in him the Gentiles will hope." (Rom 15:12)

The Good News Corner

Family Research Council Sues U.S. Department of Justice

The Family Research Council this week filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Justice for withholding public records concerning the government's decision not to defend the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

Only three hours after U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced in February the Obama administration's plans not to defend DOMA, gay activists sought to overturn California's ban on same-sex marriage--quoting from Holder's letter to Congress.

That raised red flags for FRC, which filed a Freedom of Information Act request this summer to find out just how much influence homosexual activists had on the Department of Justice's actions in the first place. On June 2, the DOJ turned over all but 27 pages of e-mail chains -- claiming the others are exempt.

"We've been asking this now for months, " said Chris Farrell, director of investigations and research at Judicial Watch, the organization representing FRC in the case. "The Justice Department plays their usual kick-the-can stall tactics, or they obfuscate and try to blur things as much as they can. They're very unresponsive."

FRC filed an administrative appeal, but the Justice Department has not responded, despite legal requirements to do so. (CitizenLink)

- Pray for the successful litigation of this lawsuit. May justice be served in this case, and may the Obama administration be held accountable for withholding evidence in violation of the Freedom of Information Act.

- "I will restore your judges as in days of old, your counselors as at the beginning. Afterward you will be called the City of Righteousness, the Faithful City." (Isaiah 1:26)
