The Daily Brief - Monday, March 5, 2012

Haman recounted to Zeresh his wife and all his friends everything that had happened to him. Then his wise men and Zeresh his wife said to him, "If Mordecai, before whom you have begun to fall, is of Jewish origin, you will not overcome him,
but will surely fall before him."
(Esther 6:13)

The Daily Brief

1. Heavy clashes erupt in Syria near Jordan border - Jerusalem Post

Heavy fighting broke out overnight between armored forces loyal to President Bashar Assad and rebels who launched coordinated attacks on army roadblocks across the southern city of Deraa on the border with Jordan, opposition activists said on Monday.

- Father, we pray this heavy fighting would cease, in Jesus Name. Bring this turmoil to an end. We pray protection on the civilians in Syria.

- Look to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other. (Isaiah 55:22)

2. BP Spill Saga Far From Over - Wall Street Journal

The $7.8 billion oil spill settlement between BP PLC and thousands of residents and businesses along the Gulf of Mexico clears the way for what may become a far more expensive battle between the oil giant and the U.S. government.

- Father, we pray this will be settled in a fair and just manner for all who were involved in this oil spill.

- A false balance and unrighteous dealings are extremely offensive and shamefully sinful to the Lord, but a just weight is His delight.
(Proverbs 11:1)

3. First year in decades without new US bank - Financial Times

There were no new banks created in the US in 2011, making it the first year in decades that the country has gone without the establishment of a single start-up lender.

- Lord, we continue to lift up our economy. We speak prosperity, blessings, surplus of prosperity, overflow, increase, and success on all our hands touch, according to Deuteronomy 28.

- The Lord shall command the blessing upon you in your storehouse and in all that you undertake. And He will bless you in the land which the Lord your God gives you. (Deuteronomy 28: 8, 11-12)

4. Tornado outbreak in Tennessee and Ohio Valley; Towns destroyed, state of emergency in Kentucky
- Washington Post

Sunday's Tornado outbreak across the United States might be the largest on record in March, however it will be a few days before the full extent of the damage has been fully assessed.

- Father, we pray for these states affected by the raging storms. We pray restoration to all that has been lost. Bring comfort to these families. Provide for all their needs, in Jesus Name.

- The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not lack. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still and restful waters. He refreshes and restores my life; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil..(Psalm 23:1-4)

5. Top U.S. Bishop to All Bishops: 'We Did Not Ask for This Fight, But We Will Not Run From It'
- CNS News

Cardinal Timothy Dolan, archbishop of New York and president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, sent a letter on Friday to all the Catholic bishops of the United States reasserting the conviction of the Catholic Church that it will not yield to the Obama administration's command -- issued in the form of a Health and Human Services regulation implementing the president's health-care plan -- that Catholics and Catholic institutions must violate the teachings of their faith by purchasing and providing health insurance plans that pay for sterilizations, contraceptives and abortifacients.

- Father, we pray for a re-consideration from the Obama administration. We pray for wisdom - and hearing ears - from this administration in reference to those who are violating their religious teachings with this mandate. Rescue us Lord, from this mandate.

- We pray Romans 8:28, that all things work together and are fitting into a plan for good to those who love God and are called according to His design and purpose. (Romans 8:28)

Green Energy Subsidies

There is growing pressure from special interest green energy groups and both Republican and Democrat members of Congress to extend the Production Tax Credit (PTC) for green energy. This is a scheme in which all producers of Wind or Solar power enjoy a 2.2 cent per kilowatt/hour of energy produced. The tax credit is scheduled to expire this December and there is a strong effort from the special interest wind lobby to renew it for another 4 years. Amazingly enough, Senator Jerry Moran of Kansas, who claims to be a Tea Party Republican, is sponsoring an amendment to the highway bill (S. 1813) to renew this tax credit.
Conservative concerns

The Cost

Believe it or not, 2.2 cents per kilowatt/hour is a large sum of money. According to the Heritage Foundation, if the oil industry received a commensurate subsidy, they would get a $30 check for every barrel produced. The PTC is tantamount to an Earned Income Tax Credit for corporations. Moreover, this is a refundable tax credit whereby a wind company can actually make money off the tax code. This is not a tax break; this is corporate welfare. If wind cannot become a viable source of energy after billions of dollars in stimulus money, it never will. Taxpayers should not be purveying a private industry with an ad hoc earned income tax credit that is nothing more than a subsidy.

Free-Markets & Hypocrisy:

After three years of assailing Obama for picking winners and loser in the marketplace, are we prepared to support the same sort of managed economy? After attacking Obama for using taxpayer funds to bailout the solar industry, why are a number of Republicans asking for a quid-pro-quo for the wind industry? To suggest that we must prop up an industry that cannot subsist without taxpayer funds is the height of hypocrisy. It is also an anathema to the very free-market policies that we hold so dear.

Punchline: Please call your senators and kindly request that they stop picking winners and losers and oppose the Moran amendment to extend the Production Tax Credit.

Arizona Senate Passes Religious Protections Bill

In the wake of the federal government's crackdown on conscience rights, the Arizona Senate passed a bill 21-9 on Tuesday that protects licensed professionals from being forced to act against their religious beliefs.

State Sen. Steve Yarbrough's bill bans discrimination against individuals who decline to participate in services - such as insurance coverage of contraceptives - that violate their "sincerely held religious beliefs." The bill also prevents the state from refusing to contract with religious organizations based on their beliefs.

"Who would have anticipated that the very power of the federal government to attack the free exercise of religion, the very right of the people to answer to their conscience, would dominate the front pages and be a huge issue?" Yarbrough said during a floor debate on the bill.

The state House must still consider the bill, and it's unknown whether Gov. Jan Brewer will sign it.

"It's a pretty fundamental principle of American religious freedom that no person should be forced to choose between their job and their religious beliefs," said Deborah Sheasby, legal counsel for the Center for Arizona Policy. (CitizenLink) Read more.
