The Daily Brief

1. Sen. Frank Lautenberg, five-term New Jersey Democrat, dies at 89 - Washington Post

Frank Lautenberg, a Democrat and the oldest member of the U.S. Senate, died Monday after complications from viral pneumonia at age 89. While colleagues paid tribute to the legacy of the World War II veteran, political observers launched into heavy speculation on how the popular Republican governor would handle filling the seat of the long-time Democratic lawmaker.

With Lautenberg's death, the Senate now has 52 Democrats, 45 Republicans and two independents who caucus with the Democrats.

- Lift up the family and friends of Senator Lautenberg, asking our Comforter to bring His comfort in their time of loss. May each one come to know our Messiah, as Savior and as Lord, in His timing . . . In His Name, amen.

- "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted." (Matthew 5:4)

2. NJ Gov Calls for Special Election to Fill Senate Seat - Fox News

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Tuesday announced that he has set a special election later this year for voters to decide who will fill the seat of the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg.

Christie, during a press conference in Trenton, said he has not yet decided whom he will appoint to fill the seat until that election.

He set the primary for Aug. 13 and the general election for Oct. 16.

- Pray for Governor Christie as he makes this decision. May he be led by the Spirit of the Lord in all he does. Then, begin now to lift up the voters in the State of New Jersey, who will choose their new senator in the upcoming elections later this year. Pray!

- "I will counsel you with my eye on you." (Psalm 32:8)

3. IRS "Target" Claims to Have Proof of "Felony" - Fox News

TESTIFYING alongside other conservative activists, John Eastman, head of an anti-gay marriage group, tells Congress he has proof IRS leaked his confidential donor list to opposing group. Eastman shed light on another potential controversy involving the IRS -- the unauthorized disclosure of tax document information. He recalled how information on their donors was leaked last year and published on the website of the Human Rights Campaign, which Eastman described as their "principal political opponent" on the marriage issue. The documents showed Mitt Romney's political committee as a donor. Read more.

- Our prayers are surely being answered now, beyond all our expectations. Do not stop praying now; there is probably more to be yet exposed. In the meantime, offer praise to the Lord that Congress is doing its job and that the Constitution requires that the legislative branch does yield oversight over the executive branch of our government. Offer praise to our Lord for having granted His wisdom to our Founding Fathers, and that each one chose to obey God rather than man, as they wrote our founding documents. Praise God.

- "Let everything that hath breath praise the Lord; Praise ye the Lord!" (Psalm 150:6)

4. Treasury IG: 'No One' at IRS Would Say Who Ordered Targeting of Conservatives - CNSNews.com

The Treasury Department inspector general told Congress on Monday that he asked the big question -- who at the Internal Revenue Service ordered the targeting of conservative groups? -- but got no answers. And the new acting Commissioner of the IRS says he hasn't even asked the question yet, as he conducts his 30-day "accountability" review. (Read more)

- Keep praying!

- "For there is nothing hidden which will not be revealed, nor has anything been kept secret but that it should come to light." (Mark 4:22)

5. Creating New Computer Programs to Enforce Obamacare May Be Difficult for IRS - CNSNews.com

Is the Internal Revenue Service up to the task of ensuring compliance with the Affordable Care Act? J. Russell George, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, told Congress on Monday that "the IRS is doing what it needs to do" to implement Obamacare.

"That said, the IRS has to create many, many new computer programs, and historically, they have had trouble instituting new computer programs for implementing tax law changes. So that is a risk," George admitted. (Read more)

- Before we embark on any new project, whether it be small or huge in size, we must plan carefully and count the cost. Apparently, this step was overlooked as Obama and Congress passed Obamacare: figuring out how to "make this happen." So now we seem to be in a real fix.

Ask our Lord to forgive those in authority on this matter, for they did now know what they were doing. As He intervenes, praise Him for His redemptive plan in this fiasco . . . perhaps Obamacare will yet end up in a shredder, and in the ash heap of history. Pray!

- "Pray without ceasing . . ." (I Thess. 5:17)

6. Sebelius Says She Made 2 Calls Soliciting Obamacare Funding, but None to Health Groups - CNSNews.com

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said she made two telephone calls soliciting money for the implementation of Obamacare, but not from any entity in the health industry that is regulated by her department.

In testimony Tuesday before the House Education & the Workforce Committee, Sebelius said published reports that she solicited funds from health care and pharmaceutical companies are inaccurate. (Read more)

- In this time of burgeoning government scandals, this issue with the Secretary of HHS is one we have not yet covered in prayer. Today would be a good day to pick this matter up before our Lord, asking for truth to come to light and for justice to be done. Thank you for your prayers, amen.

- "I will make justice the measuring line, And righteousness the plummet; The hail will sweep away the refuge of lies, And the waters will overflow the hiding place." (Isaiah 28:17)

7. Nine dead, over 70 injured in new Oklahoma tornadoes - Chicago Tribune

Nine people were killed in tornadoes that swept through central Oklahomaon Friday, part of a storm system that caused widespread flooding in Oklahoma City and its suburbs, the state's chief medical examiner said on Saturday.

- Lord, we pray that the Holy Spirit comforter would minister to those affected by these storms. Restore and heal the breaches we pray. Let the shaking and trembling, the winds, and floods be a wake up call to the region and the country. Thank You for the banner of protection over the many who prayed and were saved. Heal our land we pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

- "O God, You have casted us off; You have broken us down; You have been despleased; Oh, restore us again! You have made the earth tremble; You have broken it; Heal its breaches, for it is shaking. You have shown Your people hard things; You have made us drink the wine of confusion. You have given a banner to those who fear You, that it may be displayed because of the truth. That Your beloved may be delivered, save with Your right hand, and hear me." (Psalm 60:1-5)

8. Saudis, Gulf states 'unnerved by US pivot away from Middle East' - Times of Israel

In a bid to calm regional concern that the United States is withdrawing from a troubled Middle East, the Obama administration is working to strengthen ties with several Persian Gulf states, according to experts.

- Lord, we don't know what Persian states the Obama administration is dealing with, but be do pray that he would not make mistakes with them. Only You and Your angels and Your people can uphold that region against the forces that try to control it. Hear the prayers for that region, Lord. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

- "Do you know why I have come to you? And now I must return to fight with the prince of Persia; and when I have gone forth, indeed the prince of Greece will come. But I will tell you what is noted in the Scripture of Truth. (No one upholds me against these, except Michael your prince.)" (Daniel 10:20-21)

9. Iranian, Russian arms giving Assad edge in Syria - Jerusalem Post

Sophisticated weapons that Iran and Russia have provided to Syrian President Bashar Assad have "cemented an advantage" gained by his forces in recent weeks with the arrival of Hezbollah fighters from Lebanon, The Washington Post reported on Sunday, citing Middle Eastern intelligence officials and analysts.

- Lord, Syria is in a mess that only You can straighten out. May the people come to seek You in all the turmoil and rebellion against You and each other. In the name of Jesus, the Way, we pray. Amen.

- "An evil man seeks only rebellion; therefore a cruel messenger will be sent against him." (Proverbs 17:11)

10. Arab uprising spirit comes to Turkey - Jerusalem Post

Have the Arab uprisings made their way to Turkey? It seems the Turkish people took a page out of the Arab peoples' playbook, with large numbers demonstrating in the streets in order to bring about political change. The protesters seem to be made up of more secular Turks affiliated with the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), founded by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in 1924.

- Lord, we pray for Turkey that the secular Turks and the Moslems would come to knowledge of the truth, that freedom comes only through knowing Jesus Christ as Savior and as Lord. These Arab uprisings have not turned out well, Lord. We ask for Your intervention and that innocent people would not be killed. Many have been deceived into thinking these revolutions are their answer. May they see the light of Truth. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

- "For many deceivers have gone out into the world who do not confess Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist." (2 John 7)

11. North Korean officers join Assad's forces - Ynet News

A Syrian opposition B]human rights organization claimed Monday that officers from the North Korean army are aiding Bashar Assad's forces in their fight against the rebels in Aleppo. According to the organization, a few of Assad's civilian militia fighters revealed the presence of the North Korean officers in the war zones. (Read more)

- Keep a watchful eye over all news now coming out of both Syria and Turkey this week. Use the internet, if needed, to find the news you need to pray over, as our own media seems to be paying little attention to these hot spots. Pray!

- "I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding . . ."
(I Corinthians 14:15)

The Persecuted Church

Today's Focus: The Persecuted Church

"Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory . . ." (2 Corinthians 4:16-17)

2. Has an All-Out Siege on Christians Commenced Worldwide? - Ecumenical News

Mainstream Christian leaders seldom like to admit their faith may be under siege.

Yet events and statements during the past week show that where Christians are minorities and also where they have been in the majority there is great concern about violations of their freedom to believe and worship.

Places where there freedoms are threatened seem not only where Christians are a minority faith where a majority religion discriminates against others, but also in country's espousing tolerance.

3. State Senate Criticizes Turkey on Religious Freedom- Chicago Tribune

In a buzzer-beating vote, the Illinois Senate passed a non-binding resolution Friday criticizing the Turkish government's treatment of Eastern Orthodox religious leaders. The measure, approved just before lawmakers ended the spring session, included an amendment recognizing Turkey's recent efforts to address Orthodox Christian grievances.

The measure, an un-amended version of which passed the Illinois House in 2007, appeared stuck in committee weeks ago even though a majority of senators were co-sponsors.

Orthodox leaders said the resolution was an important statement on worldwide religious freedom. Church officials criticized Turkey for confiscating church lands, closing an important religious school and imposing citizenship requirements on the church's patriarch.

The Good News Corner:

Illinois House Adjourns Without Voting on Same-Sex Marriage Legislation

Illinois lawmakers failed to vote last week on legislation what would create same-sex marriage. If passed, it would become the 13th state to redefine the institution.

The Senate approved the bill on Feb. 14. The House was expected to vote Friday, but the bill's sponsor, Rep. Greg Harris, announced that evening that he did not have enough votes to pass the measure and would not bring it up for a vote.

"The ongoing, robust debate about marriage continues," said Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) Litigation Counsel Kellie Fiedorek. "Illinois' elected officials represented the position of the people of Illinois that marriage - the union of husband and wife - is timeless, universal, and special, particularly because children need a mother and a father. That's why 37 states affirm marriage as the union of a man and a woman, just as diverse cultures and faiths have throughout history." (CitizenLink)

ABOUT CAPITOL HILL PRAYER PARTNERS

Our Mission Statement

Capitol Hill Prayer Partners (CHPP) is a ministry which is positioned on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., helping members of the Body of Christ to "pray for those in authority over us" in our federal government. Our primary purpose is to offer intercession on site for the members of Congress and their staffs each day that the Senate and the House of Representatives are in session; and our chief prayer focus is that "God's will be done in earth, as it is in heaven" [Matthew 6:10].

Because Jesus Christ has shed His blood for all, we, too, pray for ALL, in a nonpartisan manner. Also, because the scriptures indicate that "the effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much" (James 4:17), we are confident that fervent prayer, offered in the halls of the highest chambers of government in our land, can avail much for America. Capitol Hill Prayer Partners welcomes those who feel called to join us, engaging in this strategic work of intercession for our nation: "For there is no power but of God; the powers that be are ordained of God."
