The Daily Brief

1. US freezing hundreds of millions of dollars in military aid to Egpyt -Jerusalem Post

The US has decided to alter its military aid to Egypt, the State Department said on Wednesday, after Sunday's clashes in the Arab world's most populous nation resulted in the deaths of 57 people.

- Father, we are aware that our president is cutting off aid to Egypt because they have gone after the Muslim Brotherhood in a bloody conflict, and he has ties to the MB through his brother. We ask for Your Holy Spirit to move in this situation in a way that will touch the hearts of the Egyptian people for You, and bring redemption into the heart of the president.

-"The wicked are overthrown, and are not: but the house of the righteous shall stand." [Proverbs 12:7]

2. California's Brown Signs Bill Permitting Non-Physician Abortions - Breitbart

Gov. Jerry Brown of California signed AB 154 on Wednesday, legalizing non-physician abortions in the state.

- Father, we cry out to You for mercy over the State of California, as this horrifying bill goes into effect. We ask You to touch the soul of Governor Brown and change his heart, along with the lawmakers of the entire state.

-"And I will bring the blind by a way that they did not know" [Isaiah 42:16a]

3. Reid wants $1T debt hike to end of 2014 - The Hill

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is moving legislation to push the debt limit until Dec. 31, 2014, well beyond next year's midterm election.

- Lord, the debt in America is crushing. We ask for a reasonable solution to the out of control debt and spending in America.

-"When the wicked rise, men hide themselves: but when they perish, the righteous increase." [Proverbs 28:28]

4. House Republicans eye short-term debt ceiling fix, ahead of White House meeting- Fox News

As House Republican leaders prepared to meet with President Obama Thursday, conservative lawmakers were exploring the possibility of a short-term increase in the debt ceiling, perhaps trying to seize the opening after the president said he would consider the option.

Members of the Republican Study Committee, the most conservative bloc in the House, told Fox News they're looking at that possibility. Their inclination is to consider a short-term increase only if there is an agreement on a broader spending framework.

- Lord, if this is Your solution, then we pray it will go through. IF it is not, we simply put our lives and livelihoods in Your capable hands.

-"let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath" [James 1:19]

5. Glitch-filled launch of ObamaCare site decried as 'train wreck' - Fox News

More than a week into the glitch-littered launch of the ObamaCare insurance "exchanges," critics are decrying the roll-out as a "train wreck" that should give everyone pause about requiring individuals to use the new system -- or obtain insurance elsewhere -- by early 2014

- Father, we knew from the beginning that this "health care system" was going to be a disaster, so we pray that You will find a way to get rid of it from our lives.

-"As a roaring lion, and a ranging bear, so is a wicked ruler over the poor people." [Proverbs 28:15]

6. Sunday Assembly: A Godless Service Coming to a 'Church' Near You - ABC News

Sanderson Jones, who grew up in a religious British family, described the death of his mother when he was only 10 and his subsequent loss of faith as a "cataclysmic catastrophic event." So today, Sanderson, an atheist and stand-up comedian known for selling his show tickets by hand, leads the Sunday Assembly, a community of godless congregants that began in London and is now being exported to the United States.

- Father, once again we call on Your mercy over this man who does not know You. Since he grew up in a religious home, we pray that You will show Him relationship instead. Touch his heart, and help him to hit his knees in repentance.

-"Let those who fear You return to You, and those that have known Your testimonies." [Psalm 119:79]

7. U.S. Treasury, Fed planning for possible default - Reuters

U.S. Treasury and Federal Reserve officials worried about the growing possibility of a catastrophic default are crafting contingency plans to mitigate the economic fallout if Congress fails to extend America's borrowing authority, a source familiar with the plans said.

- Lord, we ask for wisdom for the Fed as it prepares for default. You alone have the answers!

-"Turn us again, O Lord God of hosts, cause Your face to shine and we shall be saved." [Psalm 80:19]

8. White House, IRS exchanged confidential taxpayer info - Daily Caller

Top Internal Revenue Service Obamacare official Sarah Hall Ingram discussed confidential taxpayer information with senior Obama White House officials, according to 2012 emails obtained by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee and provided to The Daily Caller.

- As this administration continues to violate the privacy of Americans, we pray for Your justice in this situation!

-"He, that being often reproved hardens his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy." [Proverbs 29:1]

9. The ice breaks; fiscal talks set - Cowboy Byte

President Obama and congressional Republicans have finally decided it's time to talk. Obama will meet with 18 House Republicans at the White House on Thursday as leaders of both parties intensify their efforts to end the government shutdown and raise the debt ceiling by Oct. 17. (Read more)

- Continue offering a sacrifice of praise all during this shutdown period. The LORD inhabits the praises of His people! Let's enthrone Him over us and watch what He will do to thaw stony hearts and to help get our nation moving again. Praise God!

- "Let the high praises of God be in their mouth,
And a two-edged sword in their hand,
To execute vengeance on the nations,
And punishments on the peoples;
To bind their kings with chains,
And their nobles with fetters of iron;
To execute on them the written judgment-
This honor have all His saints.

Praise the Lord!"
(Psalm 149:6-9)

Government Continues Mental Torture of Pastor as Court Frees and Immediately Re-Arrests Him - Forum 18

After nearly five months' detention - one month of it in psychiatric hospital - a court in Kazakhstan's capital Astana has ordered the transfer to house arrest of Presbyterian pastor Bakhytzhan Kashkumbayev, church members told Forum 18 News Service. He is expected to be freed from Astana's Investigation Prison tomorrow (8 October). However, his family stress that pre-trial restrictions have been extended until 17 November and Pastor Kashkumbayev will remain under tight restrictions under house arrest while the criminal investigation of him continues. He will be unable to communicate with the outside world and only be able to leave his home for medical appointments.

Kashkumbayev - who is due to mark his 67th birthday on 19 October - has not seen his wife Alfiya and all but one other family members since his 17 May arrest.

"Finally our request has been met that he will be held under more comfortable circumstances as we try to resolve the criminal accusations against him," one of his sons, Askar Kashkumbayev, told Forum 18 from Astana on 7 October. He was able to meet his father in the Investigation Prison earlier in the day and hopes he will be freed on 8 October.

Kashkumbayev's expected release from prison comes a month after atheist writer Aleksandr Kharlamov was freed from prison after nearly six months' pre-trial detention. Freed in Oskemen (Ust-Kamenogorsk) on 4 September, he too had been held for a month in a psychiatric hospital (see F18News 4 September 2013 http://www.forum18.org/archive.php?article_id=1871). One doctor had told him he had been sent to the psychiatric hospital "because you are an inconvenient person for the authorities". The criminal investigation against the 63-year-old Kharlamov continues (see below).

Kharlamov welcomed the court decision that Pastor Kashkumbayev should be freed, even if he will be under house arrest. He described criminal cases such as those against himself and Pastor Kashkumbayev as a "witch hunt". "We're going back not to the Middle Ages but to the Stone Age," he told Forum 18 from Ridder in East Kazakhstan Region on 7 October.

On 1 October, nine human rights defenders had added Kashkumbayev and two other prisoners to a list of political prisoners and called for their release, according to a statement published on the website of the Kazakhstan International Bureau for Human Rights and the Rule of Law. The signatories also expressed "cautious optimism" over Kharlamov's release and noted that he "continues to insist on his rights".

October 7 - 11, 2013

Fellow Conservative Patriots,

Something astonishing has transpired during the first week of the Democrat Shutdown. A number of Republicans and D.C. pundits are beginning to realize that this is not a slam-dunk battle for President Obama and the Democrats. As the administration continues to embarrass itself by insidiously shutting down venues that need not be shutdown, and as Democrats become flummoxed in the face of surprising GOP message discipline and willingness to fight, we actually have a chance to win this one. The key concern for this week will be maintaining the focus of this fight on Obamacare and not allowing the debt ceiling to distract our attention to other fiscal concerns.

For Liberty,

Jim Ryun

CR/Obamacare

Even those Republicans and commentators who originally opposed our fight against Obamacare have come to realize that their dire predictions of doom did not materialize. Ultimately, only 17% of the government is shutdown, and few people outside of the D.C. metropolitan area even feel the effects. To that end, Obama made a grave mistake by attempting to make the public feel the pain when he ordered a number of outdoor monuments, parks, and memorials shut down. This has created a tremendous opening for Republicans to not only fight Obamacare but to show the American people that the Shutdown is the fault of the Democrats who are looking to score political points.
Moreover, House Republicans have wisely adopted the conservative strategy of passing small funding bills for vital, popular, and sentimental functions. The voted to fund the NIH, D.C. government, national parks, military chaplains, veteran's affairs, WIC, and FEMA. Most of these bills passed the House with bipartisan support. They also voted to retroactively reimburse all of the federal employees who are furloughed. That bill passed unanimously.

If Republicans continue to play their cards right, they can apply some serious pressure to Senator Harry Reid (D-NV), and force him to take most of the pain out of the shutdown, thereby enabling the fight to focus on just the parts of government that fund Obamacare - without the cloud of collateral damage over their heads.

Headed into the new week, the House will continue with this strategy and vote on bills to fund border security, the FDA, National Weather Service, Head Start, and many more non-Obamacare related services.

The biggest concern moving forward is the complication created by the debt ceiling deadline on October 17th. Normally, conservatives would welcome the prospect of using two points of leverage to force transformational change. However, the fact that the battle of government funding and whether to raise the debt ceiling are beginning to merge is creating some complications for conservatives:
Double Trouble: While conservatives are doing a good job at messaging the fight over Obamacare with the Continuing Resolution (CR), the debt ceiling might muddle the message. At present, our position is that we will fund every function of government in the budget bill except for Obamacare. The debt ceiling brings a whole new set of issues to the table, making it harder for Republicans to keep focused.

Grand Bargain: Reps. Paul Ryan (R-WI) and Dave Camp (R-MI) have been waiting for the debt ceiling fight to change the topic to issues like entitlement reform and tax reform. There is a concern that the CR fight will be rolled into the debt ceiling and create the illusion of a grand bargain over tax and entitlement reform. This will completely distract from Obamacare and focus the attention of conservatives on other shiny objects - policy initiatives that we will never achieve as long as Obama is president. There is no way we will ever pass conservative entitlement or tax reform with the current crop of leaders. Ultimately, they might cut a deal to "fast track" and idea for reform, along with some ancillary tweaks to Obamacare, such as the medical device tax repeal or the elimination of the congressional exemption. The end result will be the waste of two leverage points without any defunding or delaying of Obamacare.

The biggest challenge for conservatives this week is to remain focused solely on messaging the Obamacare fight. Concurrently, they should push back against the notion that the debt ceiling needs to be raised immediately for fear of default. Thanks to the short-term revenue benefits of the fiscal cliff and Obamacare tax hikes, the federal government is expected to rake in a record $3.042 trillion from the private economy this year. Interest on the debt is $237 billion - just 8% of the total revenue. As long as that interest is paid, there will be no default.

It looks like Harry Reid is going to strike first blood on the debt ceiling. He is scheduling a cloture vote on a clean debt ceiling increase for Wednesday or Thursday. Republicans must use this to highlight how red state Democrats have no interest in dealing with the endless debt, and are happy to expand government to whatever size Harry Reid and Barack Obama request of them.

Power of prayer and action

Thursday, October 10, 2013

American taxpayers have paid almost three-quarters of a million dollars for a healthcare sign up website that works only about 10% of the time. If this is any indicator, socialized medicine will be worse in implementation than it is in the sign up. In reality, Americans are paying hefty taxes and will be for a long time for a system that will not work. Part of the reason it will not work is that the United States is not a socialist nation. It is historically steeped in rugged individualism and free enterprise. The remaking of America that the president has promised will likely take longer than eight years, and that is why the fight over socialized medicine is so brutal--it is the lynchpin to socialism.

When we see headlines that the president's national debt rate is on track to double . . . that California will allow non-physician abortions (isn't that one of the reasons they gave to justify abortion--women were getting abortions from back alley butchers?) . . . that the president is spending taxpayer money--your money--to give military support to the very people who are killing our troops . . . that the IRS has routinely share confidential information with the White House . . . that the government will not uphold marriage between a man and a woman...and the list goes on and on . . . there is never more a time that this nation needs prayer. It also needs action.

Given the so-called government shutdown, which is really not much of a shutdown, we have seen two things: The country can run on far less of a government than we have, and this ruling junta at the White House and Senate care little about the people they say they represent. It is also evident that Republicans who are trying to hold to their defunding of socialized medicine are not unified. Notwithstanding, the government could be at a political and philosophical tipping point. It seems that there have been enough stupid mistakes by the Congress and the White House that the American people are seeing a bit behind the curtain.
While I pray for repentance and for our nation to turn from its wicked and ungodly ways, I also pray for disciples of Christ. Jesus commanded us through The Great Commission in Matthew 28:19,20, "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations . . . to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you." 2 Corinthians 4:3,4 says, "But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world has blinded the minds of them which believe not . . ." I pray the blinders come off of even those who say they are Christians, but are so in name only, that the wisdom of the Lord be revealed immediately and held accountable by the people to the people. I pray that the Lord finds those standing in the gap for the land.
Have a Blessed and Powerful Day!

1. FRC On Obamacare vs. Religious Liberty

"Family Research Council Calls on House to Oppose Rule on Continuing Resolution, Urges Defunding Obamacare. 'This Rule also does not provide the necessary protections for religious freedom, a fundamental constitutional right, since the HHS mandate is already forcing companies to violate their religious freedoms and will harm non-profit religious organizations beginning next year. Obamacare will fund and subsidize abortion, violate religious liberties, and will impose government control over Americans' health care.'" (Family Research Council) Read more.

2. United States Appeals Hobby Lobby Decision

"Washington, D.C. - The United States government asked the U.S. Supreme Court to take the Hobby Lobby case to determine whether the Green family will be required to provide and pay for life-terminating drugs and devices in violation of their religious beliefs. The government's appeal makes it highly likely that the Supreme Court will decide the issue in the upcoming term." (Becket Fund) Read more.

3. Urgent! Supreme Court To Hear Legislative Prayer Case

"The case, which the justices will probably hear in November or December of this year, will test the impact of changes to the court's composition over the past decade. Eighty-five members of the House have filed a friend-of-the-court brief at the U.S. Supreme Court on the side of the town of Greece, N.Y., in its bid to continue opening legislative meetings with a prayer.

The brief, prepared by the Family Research Council and filed Aug. 2, said: 'Congress has an interest in a single coherent Establishment Clause rule that protects long-standing and traditional public acknowledgments of faith.'

In the New York case, the 2nd U.S. Court of Appeals ruled that the town's policy was unconstitutional. Proponents of legislative prayer said the town had a highly inclusive prayer policy and that the appellate court ignored the fact that Greece's prayer policy allowed any volunteer to provide a prayer before meetings, including individuals of no faith." A Prayer Offered by Our Senate Chaplain

Yesterday, as every day, the United States Senate opened its session in prayer. Although some days, there are guests who come to offer a prayer for our leaders, yesterday Chaplain Barry Black took the lead. Please be blessed as you read and reflect on our Chaplain's prayer, and be sure to lift him up before the Lord for continued strength in these trying times. Amen.

"Let us pray. O God, in whose presence our souls take delight, to whom in affliction we call, forgive us for continuing to sow to the wind even when hearing the sounds of the approaching whirlwind.

Lord, when our Federal shutdown delays payments of death benefits to the families of children dying in far-away battlefields, it's time for our lawmakers to say enough is enough.

Cover our shame with the robe of Your righteousness. Forgive us, reform us, and make us whole. We pray in Your merciful Name. Amen."
