1. 5 Suspected Yemeni Terrorists Released to Live in nearby Oman - Fox News

The Department of Defense announced Wednesday that five Yemeni terror suspects held at Guantanamo Bay have been released. But despite concerns from lawmakers about the risks of sending anybody back to Yemen, four were released to Oman -- which is right next door.

2. Duke Chapel to allow Muslim call to prayer- Huffington Post

The Muslim call to prayer will now be heard weekly across the Duke University campus in North Carolina.

The chant, known as "adhan," will resound from the Duke Chapel bell tower every Friday beginning Jan. 16, echoed by members of the Muslim Students Association, the university announced via Duke Today.

3. UPDATE: Duke bows to pressure, cancels weekly Muslim call to prayer - WNCN.com

Duke University has canceled its plans to have a Muslim prayer announcement broadcast from Duke Chapel's belltower on Friday afternoons. The university announced its plans to facilitate a weekly call to prayer; but on Thursday, Duke officials acknowledged the decision resulted in unintended backlash.

"Duke remains committed to fostering an inclusive, tolerant and welcoming campus for all of its students," said Michael Schoenfeld, vice president for public affairs and government relations. "However, it was clear that what was conceived as an effort to unify was not having the intended effect."

The initial plan was to broadcast a weekly call to prayer from the chapel's bell tower starting Jan. 16. The prayer service would then take place in the chapel basement. (Read more)

4. House Republicans vote to cancel Obama amnesty; Boehner slams executive overreach - Washington Times

Brushing aside Democrats' warnings of permanent political doom, House Republicans voted Thursday to cancel President Obama's deportation amnesties, casting it as an effort to undo a runaway White House untethered either to the Constitution or its own words and promises.

6. ISIS sympathizer allegedly plotted terror assault against US Capitol - Fox News

An alleged sympathizer of the Islamic State terror group was arrested in Ohio on Wednesday after authorities learned that he was plotting a shooting and bombing attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Christopher Lee Cornell, 20, of Green Township, considered members of Congress as "enemies," and planned to travel to Washington to kill employees and officers working in and around the U.S. Capitol, according to a criminal complaint. Authorities said he had two semi-automatic rifles and about 600 rounds of ammunition, and planned to build and detonate pipe bombs at and near the U.S. Capitol. (Read more)

Last week's brazen attack by a "home-grown" terrorist cell in France that targeted the staff of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo has sparked renewed interest in potential cells operating inside the United States.

8. 'BELGIAN CHARLIE HEBDO' AVERTED;
Dozen more raids reportedly launched - Fox News

MORE COUNTERTERRORISM operations are reportedly underway in Belgium, hours after police killed at least two in raids aimed at jihadists returning from Syria who were planning to launch a 'Belgian Charlie Hebdo' attack, authorities said.

The public prosecutor's office confirmed the deaths of two suspects and arrests of "several" more. Federal prosecutors were quoted as saying there had been a police operation aimed at jihadists who have returned from the Middle East to the city of 55,000, some 70 miles from Brussels. (Read more)

9. Kerry and Zarif Hold Nuclear Talks as Iran Indicts Washington Post Journalist - Reuters

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif met Wednesday in Geneva for intensive discussions ahead of a new round of nuclear negotiations set to begin Jan. 15. Kerry and Zarif expressed hope that they could accelerate the negotiation process. However, U.S. lawmakers are moving ahead with a plan to impose additional sanctions on Iran, despite concerns it could derail negotiations.

As the parties gathered in Geneva, Iran's judiciary indicted U.S.-Iranian journalist, Jason Rezaian, the Washington Post's Tehran bureau chief, who has been imprisoned since July. Iran's state news agency reported Rezaian's case was being referred to a Revolutionary Court, though it did not release a trial date nor list the charges against the journalist. While meeting with Zarif, Kerry brought up Rezaian, as well as other Americans detained in Iran. Earlier, Zarif said "This is a judicial matter, so we will have to wait for the judiciary to move forward." (Read more)
- Lord God in heaven, we do not understand these actions by our administration towards Iran, one of our enemies and clearly an enemy of Israel. We ask that there be a radical shift in policy towards disarming the nation of Iran rather than negotiating with them. We do thank You, Lord, that our own members of Congress are "staying the course" to see that sanctions are imposed upon Iran. We pray, too, for the release and safe return of Jason Rezaian. In Jesus' name, amen and amen.

10. Legislation Introduced to Move the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem - Gary Bauer

Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Dean Heller (R-NV) have introduced legislation to relocate the American embassy in Israel to Israel's capital, Jerusalem. Israel is the only country in which the United States does not maintain its embassy in the capital city. That double standard should end immediately.

Similar legislation passed Congress in 1995. Yet it included language that allowed the president to waive the law if it jeopardized national security. Every president has waived the requirement to move the embassy. Kudos to Cruz and Heller for removing the waiver language in their bill!
- Lord God, we offer PRAISE that this bipartisan bill has now been introduced in Congress and we ask for its swift passage in both the House and the Senate, and that the president will sign this into law. Enough is enough -- it's time to honor the capital city of Israel by moving our embassy there. Amen.

1. After primary, Jewish Home head sets sights on premiership -Times of Israel

Buoyed by the results of primary elections that confirmed his position as Jewish Home party leader, Economy Minister Naftali Bennett said Thursday that he could see the day when his national religious party will be running the country. "The day is coming in which the Jewish Home will lead Israel because there is no other option," he said at a press conference. (Read more)

2. Netanyahu compares France to pre-Inquisition Spain -TImes of Israel

During a closed meeting with the heads of France's Jewish organizations Monday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu likened the complacency of French Jewry to the state of Jews in Spain prior to the Spanish Inquisition of 1492, which led to their expulsion from the Catholic kingdom, The Times of Israel has learned.

The meeting, which took place at Netanyahu's hotel in Paris's 8th arrondissement, lasted about an hour and was attended by the heads of France's three representative Jewish organizations: the Consistoire, which deals with religious affairs; the Representative Council of French Jewish Organizations (CRIF), which functions as the community's political branch; and the United Social Jewish Funds, which deals with education and culture.

While Netanyahu's public call during his two-day visit to Paris for French Jews to emigrate to Israel drew sharp criticism from domestic political opponents as well as from community leaders in Europe, his meeting with the Jewish leaders was described by participants as "harsh" and "deeply insulting." 3. Nasrallah: Hezbollah ready for war beyond Galilee - ynet news

Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah warned that "Hezbollah is ready and prepared for a confrontation in the Galilee and beyond the Galilee," during an interview that will be broadcast on the Lebanese Al Mayadeen network on Thursday night.

"We are prepared for all that a war with Israel necessitates," says Nasrallah. In the past, Nasrallah has threatened that his fighters "will conquer the Galilee."

In the interview, the leader of Hezbollah says, "Every attack against Syria will not be left without a response from the axis of resistance (Hezbollah, Iran, and Syria)."

"We have weapons that can bring us a victory against any type of Israeli aggression," he said. "Hezbollah's fighting ability was not harmed and if Israel relies on such, it is making a huge mistake." (Read more)

4. Jewish leaders skeptical of Europe's tough talk on anti-Semitism - Times of Israel

As world Jewry bowed its head Tuesday during the funerals of the four French Jewish victims of Friday's terrorist attack at a Paris kosher supermarket, senior European Jewish leaders were in Jerusalem as part of a one-day solidarity trip to Israel.

Later, after a long day of meetings, in a series of post-dinner interviews with The Times of Israel, the visibly drained delegates from France, Belgium, Germany and Greece described feeling that European Jewry has entered a period of insecurity and uncertainty. (Read more)

5. Iraq Donates $28 Million to the PA - Israel National News

Iraq on Wednesday donated $28 million to the Arab League as part of its contribution to support the Palestinian Authority (PA), an Iraqi official said, according to the Ma'an news agency.

Iraq's representative to the Arab League, Diya al-Dabbas, said that the payment highlights Iraq's commitment to the "Palestinian cause." (Read more)

6. Hamas' grip on Gaza falters as workers riot over stalled wages - Israel Hayom

Hundreds of Hamas employees, whose wages have not been paid in over six months, staged a sit-in demonstration outside the offices of the Palestinian unity government in Gaza City Tuesday, vowing to stay there until their salaries were paid.

The sit-in followed a protest rally, which quickly turned into a riot, during which dozens of Hamas functionaries broke into the Palestinian government's offices causing significant property damage. Palestinian media reported that several government vehicles parked nearby were torched as well. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident. (Read more)

7. Daniel Tragerman's mother, other Israelis testify to UN's Gaza inquiry - Times of Israel

A group of Israelis, including the mother of a 4-year-old Israeli boy killed by Gazan mortar fire, testified Wednesday before a Geneva-based United Nations fact-finding mission investigating whether war crimes were committed during last year's Gaza war.

The Israelis' account was meant to tell the Israeli side of the story of the 50-day conflict with Hamas, to counterbalance what is expected to be an account highly critical of Israel. Israel is not formally cooperating with what it says is a biased forum.

On Tuesday, the inquiry said it was soliciting testimony from Israelis who were affected by rocket fire and other attacks from Palestinian terrorists. (Read more)

8. Syrian rebels, government reach truce in besieged area - Washington Post

Activists reported that Syrian opposition fighters and local government officials have agreed on a 10-day truce beginning Thursday in the last rebel-controlled district of the city of Homs. The U.N. refugee agency, UNHCR, has released a report on the declining living conditions of Syrian refugees in Jordan. Amid U.S.-led airstrikes and resistance by Kurdish forces, Islamic State militants are losing control of the Syrian town of Kobani (Ayn al-Arab) near the Turkish border. Besides Kobani, U.S. defense officials have acknowledged that Islamic State militants have gained ground in Syria, despite U.S. airstrikes. Though the U.S.-led campaign has been focused more on Iraq, where the Islamic State has lost momentum, Iraqis are criticizing the coalition effort saying it is insufficient and too slow. (Read more)

Is it what we have been waiting for?

House Speaker John Boehner made a passionate plea against the president using illegal authority to unilaterally change immigration law. The Speaker, in leading passage of several amendments to a Homeland Security funding bill, sought to reverse the "president's" intent to make lawbreakers citizens. Boehner's efforts passed by a 237 to 190 margin. The "president" says he will veto the bill, even if it means shutting down Homeland Security. His socialist Democratic Party members are outraged that Republicans would take a "full-force assault on immigrants," as put by Progressive Caucus (translate: Communist) member, Sheila Jackson Lee. A showdown is eminent.

Now you will have all the scare tactics, fear mongering and race baiting coming out of the rich Capital Hill woodwork. The Progressive Caucus (named so because it is politically incorrect to have a caucus named the Communist Caucus) wants anarchy to undermine the country, hence allowing illegal aliens--people who started their journey in the United States by breaking the law--to become citizens. This is also the "president's" position. At the same time, when they have repeatedly claimed that Islam is a "peaceful religion," they are now saying that Islamic terrorist attacks like the one in France make it even more important to fund Homeland Security.
There is a double edge to this sword. Homeland Security is a huge bureaucracy dealing with the problem of Islamic terrorism in the US. It's approach is to spy on all of us, to oppress all of us, to police all of us in order to keep a handful of Islamists from killing us. At the same time, the "president" has prevented Homeland Security from enforcing border security laws, thus allowing an untold number of Islamic terrorists to cross into the US undetected. What appears to limit Homeland Security's mission is the politically-correct notion that it cannot profile or target Islamists or other communist malcontents in its efforts to fight terrorism. The Progressives are happy with both edges of the sword. It suits their goals.

Boehner has set a path for compromise and the opposition is digging in. Americans gave an overwhelming victory to Republicans during the last election to oppose this "president" and effectively repeal much of what has been done to ruin this country during his time in office. That means results. Boehner is not proven until he is successful. Trying isn't doing. There are more fronts to attack--legal, criminal, civil--this "president" has violated the Constitution with impunity and all avenues should be employed to hold him accountable. Just as the servant who buried the talent instead of multiplying it. Jesus said in Matthew 25:30, "And cast ye the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness." These leaders govern by the consent of the people. Accountability begins in our house.

After last week's attacks in Paris, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls did not hesitate to state the obvious. He declared that France "is at war with terrorism, jihadism and radical Islamism."

That's something you will not hear from Barack Obama. Yesterday, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest was pressed by a reporter (from National Public Radio of all places) about the Obama Administration's refusal to use the term "radical Islam."

Toward the end of the tortured exchange, Earnest said that the primary reason they refuse to use the term is ". . .accuracy. We want to describe exactly what happened." But that is exactly why Obama is wrong. It is terribly inaccurate to pretend that such acts of terror have nothing to do with Islam. (Gary Bauer)

Speaker John Boehner threw down the gauntlet today. In a speech on the House floor closing debate on legislation to stop President Obama's executive amnesty for illegal immigrants, Speaker John Boehner clearly stated what was at stake -- obedience to the Constitution and the rule of law.

During his remarks, Boehner read 22 quotes attesting to the limits of presidential power -- all of them from Barack Obama's lips. Speaker Boehner even noted that the president once taught constitutional law but has seemingly forgotten what the Constitution's words mean. Here is an excerpt of his remarks:
"This executive overreach is an affront to the rule of law and to the Constitution itself. . . . Enough is enough. By their votes last November, the people made clear they want more accountability from this president. And by our votes here today, we will heed their will, and we will keep our oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America."
After Speaker Boehner's remarks, the House voted 236-to-191 to approve legislation funding the Department of Homeland Security, while defunding Obama's executive amnesty.

Boehner's speech articulated precisely why this debate is so important. My only advice is that he should give this speech every day and not back down from this fight.

(Before leaving for their annual retreat) . . . 236 members showed the Speaker how appreciative they were by voting for the conservatives' $40 billion Homeland Security bill. Although the measure does fund the agency, it strips out the President's safe harbors for lawbreakers who entered the country illegally. While the country may have boundaries, President Obama apparently does not, as Boehner rattled off 22 instances of this White House's trespasses on immigration.

"We do not take this action lightly, but simply there is no alternative," the Speaker told members in a rare floor speech. "It's not a dispute between the parties or even between the branches of our government. This executive overreach is an affront to the rule of law and to the Constitution itself." Under this White House, the administration has all but stopped deportations, which I suppose shouldn't be a surprise for a man who also has no regard for laws he does not like.
While a handful of Republicans argued that the House should moderate its approach to gain the Senate's support, Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-Ala.) said conservatives should never legislate out of fear of what the President or Senate will or won't do. "Does a veto threat mean that we don't pass anything?" he challenged. "We have to do our work and the Senate has to do their work. The President will do what he does, but we have this process." In an encouraging sign of this young House, Republicans -- including leadership -- did what was right, not what was easy.

As for the future, at least one Senator is willing to do the heavy-lifting that the House's bill will take. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) thanked his House colleagues for "fulfilling our promise to the American people that we will put a stop to President Obama's unconstitutional actions." While the Senate huddles over its next move, we applaud the House GOP for having the political stomach to do what voters wanted all along: unite to combat the President's imperialism. What's with all the earthquakes in Connecticut?

Connecticut is not known as a hotbed of seismic activity, but residents in and around Plainfield, in the eastern part of the state, have felt tremors more than a half dozen times in the past few days.

The first reports came in Thursday morning, Jan. 8 -- a 2.0 magnitude earthquake centered near Danielson, about 10 miles from Plainfield, near the Rhode Island border. By some accounts, as many as nine more quakes, one reaching as high as 3.3, were reported over the next six days, including six on Monday and one early Wednesday. The cluster of quakes, all close together both in time and in place, is what scientists call a "swarm."

Yet another quake hit Plainfield early Thursday -- this one a 2.2 magnitude temblor. (Read more)
