The Daily Brief:

"Praying for All in Authority"

Tuesday, March 24, 2015

"The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty . . ." (Zephaniah 3:17)

The Daily Brief

1. Obama dealt series of setbacks on immigration, takes fire from all sides - Washington Times

President Obama's immigration policies suffered a rough week, faltering in the courts, taking fire on Capitol Hill, angering his political base and even having his own deportation chief undercut his message as he struggles to find a middle-ground path to overhaul the nation's immigration system.

The busy week climaxed late Friday, when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced it had deported an illegal immigrant Mennonite pastor, in a case that has sparked fury among immigrant rights advocates who say it exposes the hypocrisy of Mr. Obama's own statements about pushing for a more lenient policy that keeps families together.

The deportation was announced just hours after ICE Director Sarah Saldana was forced to walk back her statement from a day earlier that she wanted Congress to pass laws requiring state and local authorities to hold and turn over illegal immigrants. (Read more)

- Father, we ask You to intervene on these immigration policies. We ask that the president humble himself and listen to counsel and work with others to find an answer to the immigration problem. We pray for our Congress to also work to find a way to work together on this issue.

- But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. (James 4:6)

2. Obama May Reveal Understandings Reached with Israel, PA - Israel National News

President Barack Obama will not support an independent Palestinian diplomatic initiative to declare a state, but may try to advance a joint American-European initiative for a two-state solution, according to Israel's Channel 1 television.

The American-European initiative, which is to be presented to the UN Security Council, will provide the "contours" of any future agreement, according to the report, which cited sources in the Obama administration. The plan will not include a timetable, but will join Resolutions 242 and 338 as blueprints for a peace deal that the international community favors. Israel is reportedly opposed to this idea. (Read more)

- Father, we pray that You orchestrate all discussions and decisions on this issue of a Palestinian state. We ask protection for Israel, and that all things work together for their good. We ask mercy upon Israel as they have to face this challenge again with the international community.

- For the nation and kingdom that will not serve thee shall perish; yea, [those] nations shall be utterly wasted. (Isaiah 60:12)

3. Senators Call For Defunding The United Nations If Obama Goes To The UN Against Israel - Western Journalism

The US Congress should reconsider funding for the United Nations if the Security Council approves a resolution on Palestinian statehood, Republican Senator John McCain said on Sunday. McCain, in an interview on CNN's "State of the Union" show, said President Barack Obama should not even be considering such a resolution.

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) threatened to cut off funding to the United Nations if President Obama uses it to bypass Congress on Iran sanctions on Thursday's "On the Record" on the Fox News Channel.

"Here's what the president needs to understand. If you go to the UN Security Council and you try to bypass the Congress to get this deal approved by the UN Security Council, but not come to your own Congress, then you're going to risk Congress cutting off money to the United Nations" he stated. (Read more)

- Father God, we praise You for this report! We ask Your Hand of protection to rest upon Senators Lindsey Graham, John McCain, their families and the members of their staff as they continue to "hold the feet of this president to the fire" for his plans to circumvent Congress by going to the UN on Iran sanctions. We thank You, dear Lord, that our three branches of government are still "alive and well," in Jesus' name, amen and amen.

- "For the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; it is he who will save us." (Isaiah 33:22)

4. CIA head: U.S. intel has 'robust' knowledge of Iran nuclear capabilities - CNN

Agency Director John Brennan said Sunday. "I think they realize that there's going to be tremendous costs and consequences and implications if they were to decide to go for a 'breakout,'" Brennan said on "Fox News Sunday," referring to Iran amassing enough of the materials necessary to build a nuclear bomb rather than use those materials for civil energy.

"There are a number of things that the United States has available to it to prevent Iran from getting a bomb," Brennan said. "President Obama has made it very clear that we are going to prevent Iran from having that type of nuclear weapon that they may have been going on track to obtain. So if they decide to go down that route they know that they will do so at their own peril." (Read more)

- Precious Lord, we do indeed pray that the US is prepared to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, especially since they have been so deceptive in their dealings for decades and so hostile to the US and to Israel. We bind up, in the name of Jesus, any subterfuge in the negotiations with Iran concerning their nuclear capabilities.

- "He frustrates the plans of schemers so the work of their hands will not succeed." (Job 5:12)

5. Petraeus: The Islamic State isn't our biggest problem in Iraq - Washington Post

Former CIA Director Gen. David Petraeus says the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant is not the biggest threat facing the United States in Iraq. "In fact, I would argue that the foremost threat to Iraq's long-term stability and the broader regional equilibrium is not the Islamic State; rather, it is Shiite militias, many backed by - and some guided by - Iran," Petraeus said in written comments to The Washington Post's Beirut bureau chief, Liz Sly. The Iranian regime "is ultimately part of the problem, not the solution" to the region's issues, Petraeus said.

Petraeus said he has "several thoughts" on Iranian Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani being in Iraq, but most of them "probably aren't suitable for publication in a family newspaper like yours. What I will say is that he is very capable and resourceful individual, a worthy adversary," he added. "He has played his hand well. But this is a long game, so let's see how events transpire." (Read more)

- Heavenly Father, this is another very serious warning being given by Former CIA Director Gen. David Petraeus to the American people of the dangers that the Iranian regime poses. Father, may this supposed 'agreement on nuclear power and weapons' with Iran be exposed for all it is, a huge danger to all the Middle East and the world at large. May the US awaken to all the many warnings that have been given, from other world leaders as well as direct threats from Iranian leaders themselves. We ask that You shut these Iranian schemes down, as we know only You can do, praying this in Jesus' Name and under His Shed Blood, Amen and Amen.

- "Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety." (Proverbs 11:14 NKJV)

6. Israel praises US for abstaining from UN session - Israel National News

As in every year since 2013, American delegation skips Human Rights Council session on stand-alone agenda as part of agreement with Israel. The United States will not take the floor at the main UN human rights forum on Monday during the annual debate on violations committed in the Palestinian territories, as part of a previous agreement not to speak, a move praised by sources in Jerusalem. The European Union, however, reiterated "the urgency of renewed, structured and substantial efforts towards peace". "The US delegation will not be speaking about Palestine today," a US spokesman in Geneva told Reuters. (Read more)

- Praise You, Father that our leaders have chosen to support Israel in this instance at the UN. We pray that there will be even more times that the US will stand with Israel and against her enemies who desire so desperately to divide her or weaken her any way they can. We pray for a constant raising up of voices in the US in support of Israel so that our leaders cannot but help support the nation of Israel.

- "And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places;" (Isaiah 32:18)

7. Jordan and Russia to sign $10b nuclear deal this month - Jerusalem Post

The Jordanian government is set to sign a nuclear agreement with Russia later this month in order to build its first nuclear power plant, Jordanian media reported. Russian state-owned Rosatom will build two nuclear power plants and the spent nuclear fuel could be sent back to Russia, which is what made the Russian offer attractive, said Khaled Toukan, chairman of the Jordan Atomic Energy Agency, Jordan's Petra news agency reported Saturday. Toukan said Rosatom agreed to supply the plant with nuclear fuel for 10 years for the station, which has an operational life of 60 years. (Read more)

- Dear Lord, we are concerned over the alliance between these two nations and we ask You to put a guard on all that goes on between them, especially that which involves nuclear power. We ask You to make this agreement to be of none effect if it should go into the production of weapons. Above all, protect Your nation of Israel. We ask this in the strong name of Jesus.

- "What sorrow awaits my rebellious children, says the Lord. You make plans that are contrary to mine. You make alliances not directed by my Spirit, thus piling up your sins." (Isaiah 30:1)

8. House Votes to Send Lethal Weapons to Ukraine - AP

US House overwhelmingly approves resolution urging President Obama to send lethal weapons to Ukraine

The House has overwhelmingly approved a resolution urging President Barack Obama to send lethal weapons to Ukraine to protect its sovereignty in its fight against Russian-backed rebels. The resolution was approved Monday 348 to 48.

There is bipartisan support in Congress to provide the arms to Ukraine forces battling the rebels. Russian President Vladimir Putin denies arming rebels in the war in eastern Ukraine, which began in April after Moscow annexed the mostly Russian-speaking Crimean Peninsula.

State Department officials say Obama administration officials are discussing lethal assistance but are waiting to see whether the agreements that led to February's cease-fire are implemented. (Read more)

- Lord God, we thank You that nothing that is happening now in Ukraine escapes Your attention. As watchmen on the wall, we ask that You graciously quicken to us any news that needs our prayers with these rapidly unfolding events. We offer prayer in the Spirit over this report, as only You know Your will for the people of Ukraine, and Russia at its border. We pray this in Jesus' name, amen.

- "We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans." (Romans 8:26)

9. Justice Department Issues New Banking Regulations - Zerohedge.com

May Signal Early Form Of Capital Controls In America

Something stunning took place earlier last week, and it quietly snuck by, unnoticed by anyone as the "all important" FOMC meeting was looming. That something could have been taken straight out of the playbook of either Cyprus, or Greece, or the USSR "evil empire", or all three.

The U.S. Justice Department's criminal head said banks may need to go beyond filing suspicious activity reports when they encounter a risky customer. "The vast majority of financial institutions file suspicious activity reports when they suspect that an account is connected to nefarious activity," said assistant attorney general Leslie Caldwell in a Monday speech, according to prepared remarks. "But, in appropriate cases, we encourage those institutions to consider whether to take more action: specifically, to alert law enforcement authorities about the problem."

A tip-off from a bank about a suspicious customer could lead law enforcement to seize funds or start an investigation, Ms. Caldwell said. (Read more)

- Heavenly Father, this notice is warning that someone withdrawing or transferring needed funds could find themselves dealing with law enforcement and/or having their funds confiscated. We know some transactions are not for good purposes but to label all customers in this manner could be extremely destructive for innocent people's lives. Father, protect Your people and show us how to prepare and respond. We pray this in Jesus' Name, Amen and Amen.

- "The righteousness of the blameless will direct his way aright, but the wicked will fall by his own wickedness." (Proverbs 11:5 NKJV)

10. Tragedy in the Alps; Plane Carrying 150 Crashes, Disintegrates-No Survivors Likely - Fox News

(France)-According to reports, French president Francois Hollande confirmed on Tuesday that a plane has crashed somewhere in the southern French Alps, saying "a tragedy that has occurred on our land."

Germanwings Flight 4U 9525 (an Airbus 320) crashed after about 50 minutes into its flight from Barcelona, Spain to Dusseldorf, Germany.

The plane was carrying 150 passengers and crew members. Early reports mistakenly reported that a distress call was made by the crew, however, new reports stated that there were no distress calls at all; in fact there was no contact whatsoever by the pilots with ground control. (Read more)

- Father God, once again we weep with those who weep . . . We ask for a thorough investigation to be undertaken to determine the cause of this tragedy. It is so rare for a flight at cruising level to fall out of the sky like this . . we wonder if it might have been struck by a meteorite? In Jesus' name, amen and amen.

- " . . .weep with those who weep. . ." (Romans 12:15)

The Middle East in Focus

"Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed," says the LORD, who has compassion on you." (Isaiah 54:10)

1. Obama, Media Lied About Netanyahu and the Palestinian State - Breitbart

For the last several days, the entire Western media has run with a false story: the story that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he no longer would, under any circumstances, endorse the possibility of a Palestinian state.

Ha'aretz, a left-wing Israeli newspaper opposing Netanyahu, reported Netanyahu's supposed comment with this headline: "Netanyahu: If I'm Elected, There Will Be No Palestinian State." The rest of the media quickly followed. Days later, when Netanyahu said that he had never disavowed his prior support for the possibility of a Palestinian state - support he expressed in a speech at Bar Ilan University in 2009 - the media accused Netanyahu of flip-flopping.

There is only one problem: Netanyahu never said that a Palestinian state was out of the question. (Read more here)

2. Erekat: PA turned to UN because 'Netanyahu is not a two-stater' - Times of Israel

WASHINGTON - The Palestinian Authority is taking its case before international bodies because it believes that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu does not support a two-state solution, longtime Palestinian Authority negotiator Saeb Erekat said Monday afternoon at the annual J Street conference in Washington, DC.

In a challenge to the Obama administration, Erekat emphasized that "those who say they believe in a two-state solution should not recognize one state" in international institutions. "They should recognize two states." (Read more)

3. UK's Cameron urges Netanyahu to pursue two-state solution - Times of Israel

Britain's prime minister spoke with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by phone on Monday, urging him to pursue a two-state solution with the Palestinians.

David Cameron told Netanyahu that a negotiated solution that created a Palestinian state was the best way to "achieve a lasting peace and to secure Israel's long-term security and prosperity," the British Guardian reported. (Read more)

4. Netanyahu receives enough mandates to form government - ICEJ News

Representatives of the Kulanu Party met with President Reuven Rivlin Monday morning and recommended that incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu form the next government, giving him an outright majority of 61 votes to do so. 5. Israeli parties prepare legislative demands for Netanyahu's new coalition - Jerusalem Post

As parties gear up for coalition negotiations, they're not only preparing to demand portfolios; there are policies they want to make sure the next government pushes forward. Nearly all of the parties that recommended Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the president plan to ask that the coalition agree to pass certain laws, but what remains to be seen is how many of them will actually end up in the new government's guidelines at the end of negotiations. 7. Residents of Israel's South: We Hear Sounds of Digging Again - Algemeiner

Frustrated residents on Israel's border with Gaza have reported hearing sounds of digging coming from under their houses, Israel's Channel 2 said on Monday. According to the report, the locals are convinced that Hamas, the terror group that controls the coastal enclave, has returned to its construction of terror tunnels at full pace.

"Today, I sat on the couch in my living room, and felt everything shaking underneath me," said a resident of one of the Kibbutzim bordering Gaza. (Read more)

8. Report: Israel spied on US nuclear talks with Iran - Jerusalem Post

10. Good news and bad news for Israel at the UN - ICEJ News

There was good news and bad news for Israel at the UN in recent days. On 17 March, the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) in Vienna unanimously adopted an Israel-initiated resolution calling for the availability and accessibility of treatment for children and youth battling substance abuse disorders. The resolution garnered co-sponsorship from 47 countries on all five continents. However, the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva issued a report Monday declaring, among other things, that Israel had "deliberately" targeted civilian homes during last summer's Operation Protective Edge. Also on Friday, the UN Commission on the Status of Women approved a resolution Friday blaming Israel for "the grave situation of Palestinian women."

In response, Israel's UN Ambassador Ron Prosor said "If anyone has ever doubted that the UN is biased against Israel, today we got further proof. Of the 193 member states in this institution, dozens slaughter innocent civilians and impose discriminatory laws that marginalize women and yet they all get a free pass. The Commission on the Status of Women itself includes some of the worst violators of human rights, as Iran and Sudan."

11. Nuclear negotiations with Iran heading towards endgame - ICEJ News

Senior diplomats from the US, UK, France and Germany issued a joint statement Saturday regarding ongoing negotiations with Iran over its renegade nuclear program. "We agreed that substantial progress had been made (with Iran) in key areas although there are still important issues on which no agreement has yet been possible," the statement said. "Now is the time for Iran, in particular, to take difficult decisions. Any solution must be comprehensive, durable and verifiable. None of our countries can subscribe to a deal that does not meet these terms." However, Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Yuval Steinitz said on Monday that in his assessment, a "bad deal" will be signed in the near future. "We think it's going to be a bad, insufficient deal," Steinitz told Reuters in an interview before meeting French officials in Paris. "It seems quite probable it will happen unfortunately."

13. US-Israel relations take another hit with spying accusations - ICEJ News

The Wall Street Journal published a story Tuesday about Obama Administration officials accusing Israel of "spying" on diplomats involved in negotiations over Iran's renegade nuclear program.

The Administration is also accusing Israel of using the information it gleaned from this alleged spying to motivate members of the US Congress to oppose the Administration's negotiating strategy.

"It is one thing for the US and Israel to spy on each other," a senior US official familiar with the details told the Journal. "It is another thing for Israel to steal US secrets and play them back to US legislators to undermine US diplomacy."

"People feel personally sold out," a senior administration official said. "That's where the Israelis really better be careful because a lot of these people will not only be around for this administration but possibly the next one as well."

"These allegations are utterly false," an official in the Prime Minister's Office is quoted as saying by the Journal. "The state of Israel does not conduct espionage against the United States or Israel's other allies. The false allegations are clearly intended to undermine the strong ties between the United States and Israel and the security and intelligence relationship we share." (Read more)

Spirit of fear

Tuesday, March 24, 2015

There are so many things going on around us that seem totally out of our control and also far from our Biblical understanding of what is just and right, that many people can become angry, confused, discouraged, or worse, fearful. Over the past few weeks, many have written about their fears. Many seem to be seeking a leader that will make things right. But there really is none. The world continues growing darker and darker. Leaders do little to stop the myriad of unrighteous acts. When the feeling of helplessness sinks in as it relates to these issues, fear often rises to the top of emotions. It's easy to say "do not fear," but how do we overcome it?

Psalm 91:1-7 gives us insight: "He that dwells in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flies by day; Nor for the pestilence that walks in darkness; nor for the destruction that wastes at noonday. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee."

Romans 8 also informs us against fear. Verse 28 says, "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." And verse 31, "If God be for us, who can be against us?" 2 Timothy 1:7 says, "For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." From my perspective, we must come to the point of trusting God with all things, all parts of our lives. We must follow God not man. There is no political candidate or leader that we can put our faith in. We need to put our faith in the Lord and in doing so, choose Godly leaders who become stewards of God's word and keepers of His righteousness.

It took us a long time to get into the mess we have before us. It was, quite frankly, allowed by the disengagement of Christians from our society. Seminaries and pastors and do-gooders have hijacked God's word and have turned it into something extra-biblical, emotional, and self indulgent. As a nation, it became about what God can do for us, not what we are instructed to do by God. What we are now faced with will take a lot of prayer and a lot of action to turn around. Our first step must be to trust in the Lord. In that trust, in that faith, fear has no place. As Romans 13:12 says, "The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light." No spirit of fear.

Of truth, deception and disaster

Jesus said in Matthew 24:4, "Take heed that no man deceive you." He then went on to explain what would happen in the times leading up to his return. The Apostle Paul wrote of perilous times in the last days in 2 Timothy 3:13, saying, "But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived." Ephesians 5:6 warns: "Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things come the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience." There are also many verses that warn against deceiving ourselves. So then, when the truth is right in front of us, why are so many people deceived? How is it that they will not suspend their disbelief long enough to open their eyes to the truth?

The "president" of the United States is leading the nation down a path of sure destruction. He is taking actions that have catastrophic consequences not only for Americans, but for people around the world. From his lawless support of same sex marriage to refusing to secure the borders from an illegal alien invasion to bringing high-risk Muslims from radical areas of the Middle East for resettlement in America, to supporting a plan that will surely lead to Iran having nuclear capabilities, this "president" has turned on America. His support of terrorist organizations and terrorist sponsoring entities is no less than treasonous because we are at war with Islamists. Yet, nothing is done about it as if these things are not happening.

His most senior advisor was raised in Iran. He is ramrodding an agreement that will allow Iran to become a nuclear power at the same time, the very same time, Iran's supreme leader is saying he wants to destroy America. In a Saturday speech, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that "death to America" was justified because America is behind all the threats to Iran. According to Congressman Trent Franks (R-Az), a recently translated Iranian military document endorses a nuclear EMP attack on the US. Newsmax reported in February that Iran has already tested an intercontinental ballistic missile "for peaceful purposes," and has satellites at altitudes capable of an EMP attack if they were armed with nuclear weapons.

This does not sound like a nation just trying to develop nuclear power for peaceful energy needs. Surely, the White House knows the same information. Yet, the "president" is bullying Americans and Israel into accepting a deal to give Iran what it needs to destroy us. Secretary of State John Kerry told the news media that Britain, China, Russia, France, Germany and the US were determined to get a deal done with Iran--at the same time the Ayatollah was calling for death to America. Americans and American leadership must wake up to these truths. This administration must be stopped otherwise there will be disastrous and deadly consequences to ourselves and our families.

Veterans still can't get medical help on time

Months after the Veterans Administration scandal exploded in the headlines, top officials are still lying and hiding information from Congress, and President Obama is actively trying to roll back the freedom of veterans to seek health care outside of the government system. That's the conclusion of Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Kan., a member of the House Veterans Affairs Committee.

Are there signs of improvement? Huelskamp said when Congress tries to separate fact from fiction, the massive VA bureaucracy grinds investigations to a halt. "We have documented where they have lied to the committee, where they have falsified information," he said.

If anything good came out of the VA scandal, Huelskamp believes it is the provision within last year's reform bill that allows veterans to access care outside of the government system to shorten how long they wait for care. The congressman said expanded choice is working well for veterans and no longer forces many of them to travel hundreds of miles to approved doctors and facilities. He said that change is further proof the less government is involved in our health care, the better that care will be.

"There's a pushback from the administration, but the secretary has agreed - maybe not the president but the secretary has agreed - veterans deserve to keep their choice," he said. "We're trying to push the VA in a different direction than Obamacare is taking the rest of the health-care system. I think, at the end of the day, the better model is putting Americans in charge of their health care, not Washington, D.C." (Read more)

- Heavenly Father, we are thankful that Rep.Tim Huelskamp is working diligently to check into the backlog of veteran health care and has continued to do so despite his committee being given falsified information repeatedly. May the provision from last year's reform bill, allowing veterans to access care outside of the government system be continued until the hideous backlog in the VA of excessively delayed medical care is corrected. Father, we ask You to raise up Your righteous right hand and to slam down any pushback to eliminate this option by the executive branch. We pray this in Jesus' Name and under His Shed Blood, Amen and Amen.

- "Blessed is he who blesses you, and cursed is he who curses you." (Numbers 24:9b NKJV)

Obama: Ruling "By Hook or By Crook"

Obama: 'By Hook Or Crook,' I'll Expand Government

President Barack Obama says he's going to push the limits on presidential power as far as he can go during the last two years of his tenure. "Where [elected Republicans in Congress] are not willing to work with us, we will do it administratively or we will convene the private sector," he said in a friendly interview with The Huffington Post. "By hook or by crook," he added.

Obama said his big-government push would "make sure that when I leave this office, that the country is more prosperous, more people have opportunity, kids have a better education, we're more competitive, climate change is being taken more seriously than it was, and we are actually trying to do something about it."
In practice, Obama's agenda includes more progressive control over peoples' salaries, education practices and the energy companies. Each expansion means that state and local governments plus large and small companies will cooperate with regulators to push progressives' goals, instead of trying to please Americans voters, taxpayers and free-market consumers. (Daily Caller) Read more.
- - Father, we ask You to bring under control these rogue actions of this administration. To continually go around Congress and push through legislation is alarming. All branches of government are designed to have checks and balances, and this branch is out of control. Bring balance to our government. In Jesus name.

- "I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me." (John 5:30)

More About that Speech

News Cruz on the Scene of GOP Bid

Posted on Monday, March 23, 2015

You didn't have to be in Lynchburg, Virginia to hear the starting gun of the 2016 presidential race. The first out of the gate was Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who distanced himself from the competition by announcing his campaign for liberty at Liberty.

Anxious to get a lead on the crowded GOP field, Senator Cruz picked the largest Christian university in America to announce his candidacy. Senator Cruz's presence on campus this morning followed a long line of presidential candidates who have fanned the flames of conservatism on Liberty's campus. Still, today's speech was significant in that it not only signaled the start of the effort to win the support of evangelical voters (which made up almost 50% of the primary vote in the 2012 presidential cycle), but it once again flies in the face of the pundits who are eager to eulogize social conservatives or the "Religious Right."

. . . "Today, roughly half of born again Christians aren't voting," he said. "They're staying home. Imagine instead millions of people of faith all across America coming out to the polls and voting our values." As a graduate of Liberty, I can appreciate that it didn't become the largest Christian university in the world by compromising on truth. And like us, Senator Cruz seems to understand that the next generation of believers is looking for conviction -- not a milquetoast version of the Gospel that requires nothing. "From the dawn of this country," Senator Cruz explained, "at every stage America has enjoyed God's providential blessing. Over and over again, when we face impossible odds, the American people rose to the challenge."
He asked the auditorium of Liberty students to be those people, the next generation of patriots willing to take their nation back. It's time to "get back to principles," he said to huge applause. That means, he explained, repealing ObamaCare and Common Core, abolishing the IRS, securing the border, protecting privacy rights and the Second Amendment, honoring the Constitution, giving every child the right to a quality education, and -- as students erupted in cheers -- "standing unapologetically with the nation of Israel." But all of that, he warned, is impossible without first recognizing "that our rights don't come from man. They come from God Almighty." While some Republicans seem embarrassed by their faith, Senator Cruz embraced it, making a point to share his testimony and the "transformative love of Jesus Christ." . . Will This Tropical Plant Cure Melanoma? New Study Looks Hopeful

(Chicago, IL)-Previous studies have demonstrated that polyphenolic compounds in edible plants have various pharmacological benefits, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic, and anti-atherogenic effects. (Photo: Wikipedia Commons) A new study in the Journal of Food Science, published by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), found that Hibiscus sabdariffa leaf polyphenolic extract (HLP) may induce human melanoma cell death and may serve as a chemotherapeutic agent to eliminate cancer cells without significant harmful effects to normal cells.

Hibiscus leaf is consumed as a vegetable served in sauces or soups in Africa. The findings of this study support the idea that cancer patients may benefit from consuming HLP as a complementary medicine to their treatments.

Melanoma is highly curable if caught early, but is much more likely than other forms of skin cancer to spread if left untreated.

In the Sweet By and By

Songs Our Grandmothers Sang:

IN THE SWEET BY AND BY

"In My Father's house there are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you." (John 14:2)

In these perilous times, when all that can be shaken is being shaken, let us return to the "faith of our fathers" and sing the hymns and songs of old.

May we each draw strength in our own time, as we "dig the wells of treasure" to draw upon the strength that carried our ancestors through their own perilous times. Amen.

IN THE SWEET BY AND BY

Lyrics:

There's a land that is fairer than day,
And by faith we can see it afar;
For the Father waits over the way
To prepare us a dwelling place there.

Refrain

In the sweet by and by,
We shall meet on that beautiful shore;
In the sweet by and by,
We shall meet on that beautiful shore.

We shall sing on that beautiful shore
The melodious songs of the blessed;
And our spirits shall sorrow no more,
Not a sigh for the blessing of rest.

Refrain

To our bountiful Father above,
We will offer our tribute of praise
For the glorious gift of His love
And the blessings that hallow our days.

About the Author:

Words: Sanford F. Bennett, 1868.

Music: Joseph P. Webster

About the Hymn:

Mr. Webster, like many musicians, was of an exceedingly nervous and sensitive nature, and subject to periods of depression, in which he looked upon the dark side of all things in life. I had learned his peculiarities so well that on meeting him I could tell at a glance if he was melancholy, and had found that I could rouse him up by giving him a new song to work on.

He came into my place of business [in Elkhorn, Wisconsin], walked down to the stove, and turned his back on me without speaking. I was at my desk. Turning to him, I said, "Webster, what is the matter now?" "It's no matter," he replied, "it will be all right by and by." The idea of the hymn came me like a flash of sunlight, and I replied, "The Sweet By and By! Why would not that make a good hymn?" "Maybe it would," he said indifferently. Turning to my desk I penned the words of the hymn as fast as I could write. I handed the words to Webster. As he read his eyes kindled, and stepping to the desk he began writing the notes. Taking his violin, he played the melody and then jotted down the notes of the chorus. It was not over thirty minutes from the time I took my pen to write the words before two friends with Webster and myself were singing the hymn.

This song was sung in the Academy Award winning movie Sergeant York (1941).

Supertide turns abbey into island

Once-in-18-year phenomenon envelops France's Mont Saint-Michel

MONT SAINT-MICHEL, France (AP) - A supertide turned France's famed Mont Saint-Michel into an island on Saturday and then retreated out of sight, delighting thousands of visitors who came to see the rare phenomenon.

The so-called "tide of the century" actually happens every 18 years. Although the tide rushes in and out along the whole northern French coast, it's especially dramatic at the UNESCO world heritage site, an ancient abbey normally linked to the mainland only by a narrow causeway at high tide.

But the supertide, said to rise at the pace of a horse's gallop, turned the Mont briefly into an island Saturday, while the day's low tide allowed people to walk on the expansive flat seabed.

Among those at the abbey on Saturday was Wilfred James, who drove six hours from central France in time for the morning tide. "It's been a long time since we've seen Mont Saint-Michel surrounded by the sea. I was born in this region and I never saw it like this," he said.
