"The decision was made due to the most current local threat assessments. School-based health clinics in at least 13 Seattle-area public high schools and middle schools offer long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs), including IUDs and hormonal implants, to students in sixth-grade and above at no cost, according to Washington State officials. Christian Prayers for Ramadan Day Sixteen: Friday, July 3, 2015 Bosnia-Herzegovina: culture, conflict and the cross The beautiful country of Bosnia- Herzegovina was the setting for one of the most devastating wars of the 20th century. If you walk down the streets of Sarajevo today, bullethole- ridden walls are reminders that it endured a tortuous siege lasting nearly four years. One of the deadliest episodes in this war was the execution of 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys in the town of Srebrenica by Bosnian Serb forces. Religious nationalism in Bosnia-Herzegovina became an idol that brought savage destruction. Ethnic wars make sharing Jesus so much more challenging. The roots of this conflict extend back to 1389, when a Turkish Muslim army was victorious over the ethnic Serbians. In the 1990s, as communism fell these old ethnic rivalries re-emerged; fighting broke out again between Serbians (who were Orthodox Christians), Croatians (Catholics) and Bosnian Muslims. Religion was used by all sides, and the cross of Jesus, the ultimate symbol of love, was raised as a standard by both Catholic Croat forces and Orthodox Serb forces. The war was immensely complicated, and many atrocities were committed on all sides. The war was not a religious one, yet religion brought definition to the different ethnic groups. Christianity was used as justification for war and a motivation to fight. How far this was from the Jesus who told a people under brutal Roman occupation to "love your enemies". How far this religious tribalism was from the Jesus who said it didn't matter what mountain we worshipped Him on, but what was important was that we would worship the Father in Spirit and truth (John 4:21-24). How can we expect Muslims in Bosnia-Herzegovina today to convert to the religion of those who committed the Srebrenica massacre? How can they understand the truth of what Jesus did on the cross when it has been so tainted by the war? Yet the Muslims of Bosnia-Herzegovina desperately need to meet Jesus, the Prince of Peace. How can we pray? That followers of Jesus in Bosnia- Herzegovina will be courageous witnesses to the beauty of the grace-soaked gospel of Jesus. That young Bosnian Muslims will be protected from the excesses of extremism and develop a hunger only Jesus can fill. Pray they will have dreams of Jesus. For a deep reconciliation to permeate this land, leading to a turning to Jesus, the one in whom there is no Jew or Greek, Croatian, Serb, Bosnian, Muslim, Orthodox or Catholic. Lamprey Eels Fall From Sky Over Alaska Several foot-long lampreys have apparently fallen out the sky recently in Fairbanks, Alaska. They've been found in a shopping center parking lot and on lawns, and residents are unnerved by the creepy, toothed eel-like fish. According to a story in the Alaska News-Miner, "Adult Arctic lampreys have fallen from the sky four times this week in Fairbanks, including at the Value Village parking lot, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. That's unusual for a fish that's seldom seen in the water up here." While some news outlets had fun sensationalizing the story (a "New York" magazine headline blared that "Horrifying Fish Monsters Are Falling from the Sky" and another noted that "'Vampire Fish' Fall From the Sky in Alaska") it's a weird enough story on its own. The phenomenon of small animals (such as worms, fish, or frogs) falling mysteriously from the sky has been reported for centuries. Waterspouts or tornadoes crossing over a lake or river can pick up debris, including lightweight aquatic animals, and carry them for miles before raining them down on a puzzled populace. There were no reported tornadoes or waterspouts in Fairbanks, however. It could be a prank, but the most likely explanation for the falling lampreys was offered by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game: they're dropped from the air by seagulls. Seagulls can often be seen feeding on lampreys and small fish in and over the water, but they don't always eat their prey on the spot. Sometimes they fly away with their marine lunch in their beaks, and on occasion the birds will accidentally drop their meal before it's consumed. In those cases a lamprey may be found some distance from its aquatic home, and unless a person happens to be watching a seagull as the bird drops its meal, a lamprey would appear to fall from the sky (or be found on a sidewalk) without any apparent origin. A grand total of four lampreys have been found over the past week-hardly a deluge-and the fact that dead lampreys are rarely seen up close by the general public (being difficult to catch and not sold commercially in the area) may have added to the unnerving effect. Jewish, Arab, Iranian Believers Prove Peace is Possible With the Middle East engulfed in flames, a story of peace and reconciliation was unfolding last week in Manchester, England, where delegates from all over the Muslim world came together for a unique conference. And as Iran continues its aggressive stance against Israel, threatening to wipe the Jewish state off the map, Iranian refugees and asylum seekers now living in Britain embraced their Jewish 'brothers', some of whom had travelled from Jerusalem to meet with them. Also present was a sizable contingent of Egyptians along with representatives from Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Turkey, Iraq, Lebanon and Algeria. Others wanting to join them had been unable to get visas. As part of the great untold story of the Middle East, the three-day conference was hosted by the Church's Ministry among Jewish people (CMJ), a 200-year-old Anglican society specifically dedicated to spiritual revival in Israel. Although working mainly among Jews since its founding in 1809 by slave trade abolitionist William Wilberforce and others, CMJ has also consistently reached out to Arabs over the years and, in 2012, held their first At the Crossroads conference at their Jerusalem headquarters to enable Jew and Gentile to express their oneness in Christ and work together to spread the gospel on the basis of a prophecy from Isaiah (chapter 19) of a "highway" of peace and reconciliation from Egypt to Assyria (which includes much of the modern-day Arab world) via Israel.
