"Praying for All in Authority"
Monday, February 8, 2016

"But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober." (1 Thessalonians 5: 4-6)

UN Security Council calls emergency meeting after North Korea rocket launch

PYONGYANG, North Korea, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- North Korea fired a long-range rocket and placed a satellite into space Sunday morning, an act immediately condemned internationally.

North Korean state news agency KCNA announced a Kwangmyongsong carrier rocket blasted off from Sohae Space Center with a local 9 a.m. launch time. The rocket, carrying a Kwangmyongsong-4 satellite, entered orbit nine minutes and 46 seconds after launch.

The rocket launch was confirmed by U.S. Strategic Command spokesman Lt. Col. Martin O'Donnell.

"Initial observations, available on the publicly-available website Space-Track.org, indicate these two objects -- NORAD catalog identification numbers 41332 and 41333 -- are at an inclination of 97.5 degrees," O'Donnell said, adding that the incident "did not pose a threat to the U.S. or our allies."

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the launch is "deeply deplorable," adding it violates Security Council resolutions "despite the united plea of the international community against such an act."

"This is the second time in just over a month that the DPRK has chosen to conduct a major provocation, threatening not only the security of the Korean peninsula, but that of the region and the United States as well," U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said in a statement.

South Korea said it will begin discussing the deployment of the U.S. THAAD missile defense system in response to North Korea's actions.

China said it "regrets" North Korea's actions, but urged "relevant parties" to "refrain from taking actions that may further escalate tensions on the Korean peninsula." (UPI) Read more here.

- Father, in the Name of Jesus Christ our Lord, we take authority over the actions of North Korea. We appeal to You, Lord Jehovah, as the King of all kings and the Lord of all lords, to intervene against the actions of a nation that is led by a man whom many believe to be completely insane. We ask You to place a hedge around North Korea's young president, Kim Jong-un, stationing Your angels round about him to hem him in.

Thank You, Father, that You can and will serve as a restraining force against this leader, as we ask You to do so. Humble him, Father, and cause him to come to know You as the One who has all power, and as his own Savior and Lord.

Lord God, we ask You, too, to render any nuclear weapon in the hands of the North Koreans useless, by the power of Your shed Blood, in the name of Jesus Christ we pray, amen.

- "On his robe at his thigh was written this title: King of all kings and Lord of all lords." (Revelation 16:19)

1. Hamas calls for suicide bombings in Israeli buses - Times of Israel

The Palestinian terror group Hamas called Sunday on activists to carry out suicide bombing attacks against Israelis, specifically on buses, in a manner reminiscent of the devastating attacks of the 2000-2005 Second Intifada.

In a music video posted online, Hamas, the de-facto ruler of the Gaza Strip, praised terrorists who target civilians in front of a burning green-and-white Egged bus, Israel's main public transportation provider.

"To die as a martyr for Al-Aqsa [Mosque] gives the explosive device more and more force," the song posted by the official Hamas channel Al-Aqsa TV said. (Read more)

2. Hamas executes military commander who 'spied for Israel' - Times of Israel

The armed wing of Hamas, the terror group which rules the Gaza Strip, said Sunday it had executed one of its members, with sources familiar with the case calling him a senior official accused of spying for Israel.

"The Al-Qassam Brigades announce that the death penalty pronounced against its member Mahmud Eshtawi has been applied today at 1600 hours," Hamas's armed branch said in a statement. Websites linked to the Palestinian Fatah group had in the past alleged that Eshtawi had led Israel to the hiding place of Hamas commander Muhammed Deif during the 2014 Gaza war, resulting in a failed assassination attempt against him, according to Israel Radio. 3. Abbas signals solidarity for terrorism, as Gaza talks of war again - Times of Israel

About two weeks ago, Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) met with a group of Israeli journalists, myself included, in the Muqata in Ramallah. The rais made firm statements against violence and terrorism and repeated his call for the resumption of peace talks.

On Wednesday afternoon, just hours after three Palestinian youths from Qabatiya carried out a horrific terror attack at Damascus Gate in which Border Police officer Hadar Cohen, 19, was killed, Abbas met in the same office with parents of several young Palestinian terrorists who had murdered Israelis - terrorists whose bodies had not been returned. He promised to rebuild the families' homes, which Israeli security troops had demolished.

It may be that Abbas sees such a promise as a humanitarian gesture, perhaps an act of mercy, toward the families. But he must know how his words and deeds would be interpreted in Palestinian and Israeli society: as an act of solidarity and support for terrorists' actions in a week that those three young men, from families that are strong supporters of Fatah, went on a killing spree outside Jerusalem's Old City, and a Palestinian Authority police officer tried to kill three young soldiers. Plainly, this is no way to build peace; nor is it any way to convey a message against violence and terrorism. (Read more)

4. As terror rages in Israel, hundreds of ex-combat troops get gun licenses - JNS.org

Israel Hayom/Exclusive to JNS.org) The Israeli Public Security Ministry on Thursday issued 304 firearm licenses to former members of the IDF's anti-terrorist unit, Duvdevan. The decision was made in light of the dramatic rise in terrorism across Israel in recent months, and as part of Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan's stated policy of easing the criteria for carrying a firearm.

"Issuing gun licenses to former Duvdevan members is a sensible step due to the security realities, and it will enhance our response capabilities in cases of possible terrorist attacks," Erdan said.

"There is a pressing need for far more trained civilians in the streets, who can save lives," he added. (Read more)

5. Netanyahu: War on terror is a long one, but we can win - Israel Hayom

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited on Thursday Ravit Mirilashvili, a border policewoman who was seriously wounded in a terrorist attack at Damascus Gate in Jerusalem on Wednesday and who was still hospitalized at Hadassah Mt. Scopus Hospital, as well as an IDF soldier who was wounded in a terrorist attack in Beit El a few days ago.

"Your reactions and your resourcefulness prevented terrible disasters. The entire people of Israel embrace you and hope that you will recover quickly," Netanyahu told them.

"Ravit acted with heroism and resourcefulness together with her fellow officers. Together with their commander, they prevented a much greater disaster. I was impressed by the courage, tenacity and steadfastness of her and her family. Of course, we all grieve over the death of Hadar Cohen, a genuine hero. We all embrace her family." (Read more)

6. State Dep't: Kerry not coming to Israel soon or planning new peace bid - Times of Israel

The US State Department on Saturday evening flatly dismissed an Israeli television report that claimed US Secretary of State John Kerry will come to Israel in the next few weeks in a new effort to restart a diplomatic process with the Palestinians.

The Channel 2 TV report Saturday evening predicted that Kerry would seek to revive some kind of "limited political process," even though the White House announced last year that it did not believe a permanent accord could be attained in the remaining period of the Obama presidency.

The report also suggested that, in the absence of significant progress, the Obama administration might seek "to impose" some kind of accord in the final months of the Obama presidency - after a new US president has been elected, and before President Barack Obama steps down. (Read more)

The Daily Brief

1. Syria conflict: Russia strikes 'undermining peace talks' - BBC

Russian air strikes in Syria are "undermining" efforts to find a political solution to the war, Nato's secretary general has said. Jens Stoltenberg said the raids were mainly targeting the Syrian opposition. Moscow insists it is battling "terrorism".

This week, fledgling peace talks were suspended as Syrian government forces, backed by the Russian military, launched a fresh offensive against rebels in Aleppo. Thousands of civilians are reported to be fleeing Syria's largest city.

"The intense Russian air strikes mainly targeting opposition groups in Syria are undermining the efforts to find a political solution to the conflict," Mr Stoltenberg said. He said the air strikes posed a particular problem for Nato member Turkey, which is already embroiled in a row with Russia after Turkey shot down a Russian jet it accused of violating its airspace. Increased Russian activity "creates risks and heightens tensions and is of course a challenge for Nato", Mr Stoltenberg said. (Read more)

- Father God, only You can help the nations sort out the tangled mess that is now in place in Syria. We ask that You unleash Your holy angels to visit all parties involved, so that crooked paths are made straight and all would be aligned according to Your perfect will in this war-torn nation. We ask for a miracle and we pray for peace in the nation of Syria, in Your name, amen and amen.

- "I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron . . ." (Isaiah 45:2)

2. Iranian commander mocks Saudi offer to intervene in Syria - CNN

Saudi Arabia's fresh public willingness to send ground troops into Syria is drawing ridicule from the kingdom's chief regional rival. The commander of Iran's revolutionary guard on Saturday mocked Saudi Arabia's declaration that it is prepared to commit ground troops to fight ISIS in war-torn Syria.

"They claim they will send troops (to Syria), but I don't think they will dare do so," Maj. Gen. Ali Jafari told reporters in Tehran, according to Iran's semiofficial Fars news agency. "They have a classic army and history tells us such armies stand no chance in fighting irregular resistance forces."

"This will be like a coup de grace for them. Apparently, they see no other way but this, and if this is the case, then their fate is sealed," Jafari added, according to Fars. (Read more)

> > > See also: "UAE says ready to support anti-IS coalition with troops" (Reuters). Go here.

- Father God, we see that the UAE is now also joining forces with the Saudis to place "boots on the ground" to fight ISIS in Syria. Thank You, Lord, that these Arab nations are now rising up to confront this tremendous danger in their own region. We ask for Your hand of protection to rest upon these troops as they are deployed in Syria. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, amen and amen.

- (Re: the mocking of Iran) "The wicked plot against the righteous and gnash their teeth at them; but the Lord laughs at the wicked, for he knows their day is coming." (Psalm 37:12,13)

3. French PM vows to extend state of emergency, says terror threat in France 'here to last' - Jerusalem Post

Thousands of house searches since November's Islamist attacks in Paris have helped foil another terrorist plot, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said on Friday as his government sought to extend emergency rule.

Valls, defending state of emergency rules that have allowed police conduct thousands of house searches in just a few months, also said over 2,000 French residents were believed to be involved with jihadi networks based in Syria and Iraq.

"The terrorist threat is here, and here to last," Valls told the National Assembly, where the government is asking lawmakers to extend the state of emergency to the end of May and amend the Constitution so people convicted on terror charges can be stripped of their citizenship. (Read more)

- Father God, we ask that You grant Your wisdom and Your grace to those in authority in the nation of France, as they continue to fight terrorism on their land. We lay axe to the root of this threat, which goes back centuries but which especially took hold during the revolution in Algeria, when the forces of Islam took over the nation, forcing out the French government. We ask You to demolish this root, replacing it with Your presence. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, amen and amen.

- " . . . God . . . calls those things which are not as though they were." (Romans 4:17)

4. EU Parliament Recognizes ISIS' Genocide of Christians, Calls on World Leaders to Take Action - Christian Post

The European Parliament voted overwhelmingly Thursday in France to designate the ongoing mass slaughter in the Middle East being carried out by the Islamic State terror group against minorities a "genocide," something which religious freedom advocacy groups said could save lives.

"Genocide is an internationally recognized legal term and it is necessary to call for further steps such as a referral by the U.N. Security Council to the International Criminal Court in order to condemn and punish the perpetrators of genocide. We hope that the resolution that the European Parliament adopted today will ultimately help to save lives," Sophia Kuby, director of EU Advocacy at Alliance Defending Freedom International, told The Christian Post in a statement.

Kuby added that Christians in the Middle East are in urgent need of international institutions like the EU Parliament to recognize their plight. (Read more)

- Father, we praise You for this statement by the EU Parliament in France, decreeing that the mass slaughter of Christians by ISIS is, indeed, genocide. We ask that our own government would now come into alignment with this legal move, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, amen and amen.

- "Let everything that hath breath praise the Lord." (Psalm 150:6)

5. White House Explains Why Obama Won't Call Islamic State's Murder of Christians 'Genocide' -The Blaze

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest admitted Thursday that the Obama administration's hesitation to label the Islamic State's persecution of Christians and other religious minorities as "genocide" is because of the legal ramifications behind such a designation.

White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Thursday that Obama administration attorneys are researching whether the violence the Islamic State is committing against Christians meets the legal definition of genocide. A reporter, citing the atrocities and murders in Iraq and Syria, asked Earnest, "Why won't the Obama administration call this genocide, Christian genocide?" Earnest responded that the term genocide has "legal ramifications."

"There are lawyers considering whether or not that term can be properly applied in this scenario," Earnest said. "What is clear and what is undeniable and what the president has now said twice in the last 24 hours is that we know that there are religious minorities in Iraq and in Syria, including Christians, that are being targeted by ISIL terrorists because of their religion and that attack on religious minorities is an attack on all people of faith and it is important for all of us to stand up and speak out about it." (Read more)

- God, we repent for our government, that refuses to acknowledge the mass slaughter of Christians in the Middle East as genocide. We cry out, Lord, for justice to be rendered for "our own" who are perishing under the wicked and vicious sword of Islam. Father, for every one who has died, we thank You that the martyr's blood is now shed against Satan. In Jesus' name, amen and amen.

- "And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even when faced with death."
(Rev. 12:11)

6. Nancy Pelosi Invokes Prophet Muhammad at National Prayer Breakfast, Compares Islam and Christianity - Christian Post

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., invoked the Islamic prophet Muhammad at Thursday's National Prayer Breakfast in Washington D.C., and compared aspects of the Christian and Islamic faiths.

Pelosi, a Roman Catholic, was one of the number of political and faith leaders to speak at the annual prayer breakfast, and mentioned in her speech some of the similarities she sees between Islam, Judaism, and Christianity.

"In the Gospel of John we see the golden rule that stands at the heart of the gospel, and as we hear these words from John 13, 15, and 17, we know that this message, this command of love is not confined to the New Testament," Pelosi said, according to The Daily Caller.

"The same message stands at the center of the Torah and the teachings of the prophet Muhammad too. In the Torah it says, 'love your neighbor as yourself' and from Muhammad, 'none of you has faith until he loves for his neighbor or brother what he loves for himself.'" (Read more)

- Father God, we need Your help. When our own leaders are following such twisted theology, we turn to You, Almighty God, for an answer. Lord God, please help Ms. Pelosi be set free from her confusion, and recognize that You, and You alone, are the only God we worship. Thank You, Lord, for hearing our prayer, in Jesus' name, amen and amen.

- "For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil." (I Peter 3:12)

7. FBI says Michigan man pledged support to ISIS, father thwarted mass shooting at church - Fox News

A Michigan man allegedly threatened to kill police and churchgoers to show support for Islamic State, according to a federal criminal complaint unsealed on Thursday.

Khalil Abu-Rayyan, 21, of Dearborn Heights, was allegedly talking to an undercover FBI agent about his support for the terror group and how he wanted to shoot up a church that has nearly 6,000 parishioners, according to the Detroit Free Press.

"I tried to shoot up a church one day. I don't know the name of it, but it's close to my job," Abu-Rayyan told the agent, according to the complaint. "It's one of the biggest ones in Detroit. Ya. I had it planned out. I brought a bunch of bullets. I practice a lot with it. But my dad searched my car one day and he found everything. He found the gun and the bullets and a mask."

"It's easy and a lot of people go there. Plus people are not allowed to carry guns in church. Plus, it would make the news. I regret not doing it. If I can't do jihad in the Middle East, I would do my jihad over here." (Read more)

- Hallelujah, Father! We praise You that the father of Khalil Abu-Rayyan stopped his son from carrying out this slaughter! We ask that many, many more mothers and fathers in the Islamic communities will now step forward to do the same. Let it begin here; let it begin now. Thank you Father, in Jesus' name, amen and amen.

- ". . . evildoers will be cut off, but those who wait for the Lord, they will inherit the land." (Psalm 37:9)

8. U.S. judge grants injunction against anti-abortion activists - Reuters

A U.S. judge on Friday granted a preliminary injunction stopping the distribution of surreptitious videos taken by anti-abortion activists who alleged Planned Parenthood staff discussed the illegal sale of aborted fetal tissue. The National Abortion Federation (NAF), a nonprofit representing abortion providers, accused the Center for Medical Progress and its founder, David Daleiden, in a lawsuit last year of illegally infiltrating and recording its private meetings.

San Francisco federal judge William Orrick last year issued a temporary order prohibiting the distribution of the videos, which he extended on Friday until the litigation is over. Orrick said he reviewed the videos and found no evidence of criminal activity by NAF members.

The videos released last summer purported to show Planned Parenthood officials trying to negotiate prices for aborted fetal tissue. Under federal law, donated human fetal tissue may be used for research, but profiting from its sale is prohibited. (Read more)

- O God, have mercy, we pray. We ask that this decision be appealed to a higher court and overruled. We ask You to forgive Judge Orrick, for he knows not what he does. In Jesus' name, amen and amen.

- " . . . speak the word, and it shall not stand: for God is with us." (Isaiah 8:10b)

9. Andrew Cuomo announces regulations to prevent gay 'conversion therapy' - CNNPolitics.com

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Saturday announced regulations to prevent "conversion therapy," a practice aimed at changing an individual's sexual orientation or gender identity, in the Empire State.

Conversion therapy aims to transform gays and lesbians into heterosexuals. It has been denounced by several leading medical groups, including the American Psychological Association, which says efforts to change sexual orientation through therapy have "serious potential to harm young people because they present the view that the sexual orientation of lesbian, gay and bisexual youth is a mental illness or disorder."

"Conversion therapy is a hateful and fundamentally flawed practice that is counter to everything this state stands for," Cuomo said in a statement. "New York has been at the forefront of acceptance and equality for the LGBT community for decades -- and today we are continuing that legacy and leading by example. We will not allow the misguided and the intolerant to punish LGBT young people for simply being who they are," he added. (Read more)

- Father, with all respect to the governor of New York, "conversion therapy" is not hateful, but can be used to lead one back to the straight path You have planned for their lives. Again, we ask forgiveness for another political leader for his blindness. We repent for this decision, Lord, in Jesus name, amen and amen.

- " . . . male and female he created them." (Genesis 1:27)

Super Bowl, culture and the light of Christ

Now that the Super Bowl is over, the stadium lights are off, the locker rooms are empty, there is reflection. I have read many, many reports and comments about the game, the entertainment, and the worldly aspects of this game. Because of my work in Christian character and leadership, the Lord has blessed me with the opportunity to attend the last five Super Bowls. While there are certainly negative aspects of the Super Bowl and all its glamour, if America could get an inside peek at what goes on during the week leading up to the game, there may be more positive attitudes among the Christian elite who say football is an idol, a god, and a distraction. Point is, many people judge from the content of their own hearts.

Friday and Saturday before the game, hundreds of thousands of people came together for the exhibits at the NFL Experience and at Super Bowl City. People of all walks of life, all creeds and colors, religions to just celebrate. Sport, in this case, football in particular, galvanizes communities and brings people together. It transcends politics and differences, if at least for a moment. While discussing your favorite team or player, or your most disliked team or player, can get passionate, sport brings with it a patriotism, a respect for others and a moment of togetherness. I could tell countless stories of talking to many diverse people during the week, and how sport reduces issues to a common denominator.

It's an example of how we can have passionate differences, such as teams and opponents, yet can discuss those differences from a level of knowledge and respect. If only we could gather together like this as a nation and have reasonable, yet passionate, discussions about the issues that confront us. And, yes, there is decadence and all the dark things that come with a "super" event, but there is also ample opportunity to show Christ at each juncture. Behind the scenes, there are many, many Christians involved with professional and collegiate football speaking into people's lives. There are programs for youth. There are meetings about race, domestic violence, hiring practices and more.

Who is leading many of these meetings? Christian men and women. The Super Bowl affords the opportunity to bring people together and demonstrate the good. It's one of those times that reaches beyond football, even though football is the platform. We can easily point our fingers at all the wrong and bad that comes to the forefront through the media. But please understand, the work of my hands and many, many others does not return void. The entire world is dark, but that is our opportunity to get outside the four walls of "church" and do as Jesus instructed in Matthew 5:16, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven."

Have a Blessed and Powerful Day!

Photo captures spectacular volcano eruption in Japan

One of Japan's most active volcanos erupted spectacularly Friday evening with a fiery blast that sent lava rolling down its slope.

Japan's Meteorological Agency said Sakurajima on the southern island of Kyushu erupted at around 7 p.m.

Japanese television showed an orange burst out of the side of the volcano, near the summit, accompanied by lightning-like flashes. Dark gray smoke billowed into the sky.

The Meteorological Agency banned entry to the area, expanding an existing no-go zone around the crater to a 1.2-mile radius, according to public broadcaster NHK. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Friday's eruption, while dramatic, was average compared to Sakurajima's past eruptions, Kyoto University volcanologist Kazuhiro Ishihara told NHK. The mountain's last major eruption was in September.

He said rocks spewing out of the crater were expected to fall within the 1.2-mile zone from the crater. Smoke and ash rose 1.2 miles into the air, about half the height measured in 2013 in one of the mountain's biggest explosions in recent years, he said.

"I don't think there will be any serious impact from the explosion," Ishihara said. "But of course we must keep monitoring the volcanic activity." (Associated Press) Read more and view photo here.
